Yibeee - GMT I in the house :)

Decided to let my Datejust go, to finance a very fine GMT I '91 (ref. 16700)
This will definitely be my daily wearer.

I had the original blue/red bezel, changed to a more "down to earth" black one.

What would be the most correct way (if any) to get a more rugged/safe clasp?
I had my Datejust come loose a few times, but was able to tighten it by bending the clasp plates a bit. I can do the same with this clasp, but I'd really rather have some sort of true locking mechanism (maybe from the current GMT II?). I once had a Seamaster - nothing beats that clasp

The MASTER I is a great watch. I assume your bracelet is a 78360 with 580s?
You can use a 93150 sub bracelet with 580s for better security.

...is that the clasp? Is there any way to change only the clasp to a safer one?

Honestly I'm not sure if just the clasp will work on a GMT bracelet.

What is the difference between the 1675 and the 16750? My Circa 1960's GMT comes back from RSC New York with 1675/0 on the papers. One time it came back with 1675S on the paper. This is the pre white gold marker model. Also has the 93150 bracelet with the 580 end links. I think the bracelet was replaced. Is that the correct bracelet for the watch?

I'm sure Mike and othrs can give more details, but from what I know, the 16750 switched to the quickset date (and thus a new movement).

The 93150 is a submariner bracelet.

David the 1675 was the successor to the orginal GMT, the 6542. The 1675, depending on vintage, has come with gilt dials, dials with enclosed minute rings as well as white printing, small 24 hr. hands and large.

Fitted with the 1565/1575 slow beat movement, the 1675 can be non-hacking or have a hacking feature depending on year. (Usually thought to be circa 1970-71). Orginally sold with the Red/Blue insert, later on the black insert was added as well as the jubilee bracelet option.
Of course the 1675 sports an acryllic crystal and was never fitted with a gloss WG surround dial.--although early gilt dials were gloss.
The correct current bracelet is the 78360 with 580s, although a 93150 can be used.

Rolex introduced the 16750 circa 1979-80. While the two have similiar apperances, there are major differences. First of course is the move to the then new 3xxx fast beat movement. The 16750 was the first GMT to introduce a true quick-set date feature and, of course, it hacked. While the dials of the two look similiar they are not.
The dial feet are different on the 16750 to allow for the quick-set feature and like most transitionals the coronet of the 16750 is of the unique "tall" varity.
Also different is the stack of the hands between the two. Notice the position of the 24 hr hand on the 1675 as being on the bottom,


Whereas the stack on the 16750 places the 12 hr hand on the bottom,


Circa 1983 or so the 16750 was equipped with a gloss WG surround dial. The matt version is a bit sought after by collectors.
The correct bracelet is the same 78360 as on the 1675.

Of course my favorite is the lovely gilt dials of old. The transition to white seems to have occured circa 65-66 or so (with a littlw wiggle roon)

Thanks Mike, for the info. My watch has the 1575 non-hacking movement. It is serial #13894XX. So far I know that the dial was replaced (I have the original one) the bracelet is non original and who knows what else. So I guess it's collectability is nil. It's a great watch though, what with its slimmer profile, fourth hand and I assume plenty of parts around, even if not available from Rolex. rol#3.jpg

I think that you are right - I tried on a 1675 at a central london dealers earlier this week - it was an early 70's model with orginal bracelet etc. No box or papers. Overall I would say that the watch was in average condition for the year. The dealer wanted £4,000 (approx $7500). As I was chatting to him he admitted that a couple of years ago he would have been looking to sell the watch for approx £1500, but over the last 12-18 months the prices have really started to move. Guess I am thinking I have missed the boat on a vintage GMT!!!

£4000.00 !!! - I would have a hard time handing over 4 grand for a 1675 with B+P never mind without, pretty expensive for my mind although I do agree prices are rising but that's plain greed IMO.

I think you are right - that said I have seen a couple of 1970s GMTs with boxes & papers sell for £3.5 k recently on UK web sites. That seems to be about the benchmark for a good qaulity example.

Makes my decision to turn down a GMT 16750 (matt dial version with box & papers) on offer from a local AD a couple of years ago look a very, very bad decision........especially as they only wanted £1k!!!

David that's a great looking piece! The fact that you have the orginal dial makes it quite a package! Big congrats and I also find the slim case of the 1675/16750 to be the most comfortable of the sports watches.
