Opinions of the Sub LV

Question to all:

In my considerations of a potential new Rolex purchase, in addition to considering the Exp II white dial, the Sub LV is interesting for several reasons:

1. I don't own a sub (tho I do have a SD)
2. The green bezel is unique, but is it limited to casual/business casual?
3. I like the maxi dial, as was mentioned in a previous post, the maxi dial is as close to the true design of a tool watch as anything we've seen recently.

I've seen some members flipping their LV, so any opinions as to up/down sides of this piece?

My AD had one I could have picked up just two days ago. The maxi dial from Rolex is sweet, but it doesn't seem to fit on the Sub LV. The green is sharp looking and demand is still fairly high. I don't think the green bezel limits you at all, but that's a personal choice. I guess for me, if you already have an SD, what's the point?

Since you already have two "tool watches" have you considered going to a TT sub instead? One that could be worn on my dressy occasions?

LV ... Price ? Will you get tired of the green ?

Well to me the LV its one of those watches that excite you or don't, for me its the latter.Yes I like like the maxi dial,but prefer the vintage type,to me its just a green bezel sub.And considering the Rolex submariner heritage again my opinion not a very good effort on Rolex part as a 50 year homage.And today afraid 75% or even more, will never be used as a tool watch most will never see the wet stuff.

Obviously all choices are personal, but you are asking for opinions, so here is mine.

Being that you already own a SD, to me I would look at other models that are not so close in looks.

In my opinion any Rolex goes with any dress appearal! I do not agree with putting some models in some sort of dress code box.

If you like the maxi-dial, that is all that matters. Some like it, some don't; there is no concensus.

I think the term, "tool watch" is over used/rated, as few actually use them as a "tool", such as diving.

I still have my LV, bought it early on as it's a F-serial watch. I like it very much, since I wear short/t-shirt most of the time, it goes perfectly with my casual dressing. I beleive the Sub is the next one soon to get the supercase, LV would be discontinued right after that.

Loving mine, I'd recommend it....I wear it for work with a white shirt and a tie, no problems..

I don't like the LV for these two reasons:

1) I would never become used to that green bezel (just isn't Rolex IMHO).
2) The Maxi Dial has too large hour markers and I think it is silly of Rolex to make the MINUTE hand bigger but leave the HOUR hand the "traditional size". That design just ruins the whole harmony.
3) Had the LV been limited to just a few years, I might have bought it just for collectability's sake (to earn some on it later by resale), but have you noted that in the beginning, the LV was promoted by Rolex, OFFICIALLY on the Rolex web site, as being an "Anniversary Sub", but now it has been made for many years and in great numbers to boot.
There are simply TOO many LV's out there to let it become a good investment. No modern Rolex will ever beat the SS Daytona.

As I've said before the LV is as close as anyone is apt to get to the Rolex watches of old. (At least untill the current Sub. gets updated)

It is a watch that draws strong feelings both ways. Some like the green insert, some don't. Some change it out for the traditional black.
The maxi-dial is much easier to read in less than ideal conditions, and I don't think the dial is overworked at all.

Indeed vintage matt dial references used larger markers with great success, and for a short while a version of the 5513 was made with larger markers still.

If you like go for it!

Remember the SS Daytona was very accessible for some time as they got that watch out in the consumer public and only later did they start that reduction in the numbers. Hell, Rolex could do that with SS Subs any time. I find that although there are good numbers of LV's, they are still more rare than the sub, and my AD gets 2 a year, and he is very reputable with an in house Rolex watchmaker who used to work in RSC.

My LV does not even look green all the time. Sometimes it looks almost black. The maxi dial is very nice at night. I must say that I really like mine, and know that if I want a black bezel, I can do that too. If you like SS Sub, it is a classic and good choice.

Hi friend

I like the LV. Its a great watch, all that the "standard" sub has and the maxi dial. Plus you can always put on a black bezel. This would not be considered "bastardising" the watch, you are putting a submariner bezel.

However, i would not buy it as i have a ss sub date. If i didnt, then yeah sure.

Mike, excellent photos and info as usual. I do like the dial set-up, as you say, it is reminiscent of the older Sub dials before the white gold surrounds came into play.

I'm guessing that the stainless subs are lighter than the Sea Dweller, and the LV would be the same dimensions and weight as the regualr Subs?

Yep! Subs are a bit lighter. LV is the same as the black.

I love my LV. I wear it with my suit everyday. I find it more interesting than just a normal sub.

If I had to get a sub again I will go for LV any time. Having said that it is up to each individual taste and stlye of dress code. My typical dress code is dark suit with lighter shirt plus matching tie. These days the colour of shirt and tie that people wear is a lot louder than your green sub.

As far as for future value, well simple economic said that if demand is higher than supply then price will go up. Now, try to go to any AD and ask for green sub then ask the same question for normal sub. See which one that they can supply to you on the spot or with bigger discount.

It was my first Rolex and I enjoy it as much today as when I first purchased it.

I wear my Daytona 10x more than the LV Sub, however I received 10x more compliments when I wear "Green". People see something different and it just attracts attention. It truly is a beautiful Rolex.

I don't think you can go wrong owning this watch. Buy one and if you don't like it or the attraction wear off....sell it.

No matter what you buy, you can't go wrong. Rolex watches are very classy.

I love my LV Sub I like it because it is somewhat limited; it has the maxi dial, and the green bezel. I bought mine from an AD on a vacation so there is some sentimental value as well due to the fact I search for two years prior to finding a new LV Sub at list price as I refuse to pay over list for any Rolex. I don’t care if they continue making the LV Sub because I feel everyone who wants the watch should have the chance to acquire one. It seems like many collectors buy the watch and sell it a short time later advising the watch did not go well with their wardrobe or the green was too much for their taste.

I'm mostly in agreement from what I've seen posted here already. Although you should buy what you love, I think owning a sub when you already have an SD could be a little redundant, but that's just me.
I LOVE the green of the LV and would proably choose it over the standard sub, but that's because I already have a black-face watch in the GMT-II. I've been pretty outspoken against the maxi-dial look, but I would bite the bullet for the green bezel. I know some hate it, but it's a unique and eye-catching use of color without being overly abrasive and disorienting like the Clownmaster, or dare I say the new Milgauss. The green is different enough to be unique, but still subdued enough to be 100% Rolex, IMO. That being said, if I were in your situation (which I KINDA am), I would take the white-face Ex-II over the LV Sub ANY day of the week. The LV was third on my list of "want" watches behind my new GMT-II and the Ex-II. Good luck!
