I like my GMT2C BUT - would you flip for Exp2?
I have been wearing my GMT2C SS since December.
Prior to that I wore a Subdate (classic!) Somehow, I can't just 'become one' with the GMT2C no matter how much my brain tells me I should like all the stats and specs. It's as if this is a 'consumer reports' watch to me. Like if you read CR you would only drive Toyota, or only buy a watch with 'paraflex shock absorbers' and a 'triplock crown' because it would rate higher on paper. Not bashing the watch AT ALL and in fact, when I think of selling it, somehow it looks great that day. It's a VERY strange watch for me. Do you veteran members have a thought on this? I have been thinking of trading / selling for a 3186 movement Explorer 2 black stainless. It's traditional enough to feel like my old watch, but has enough new 'guts' to get past the 'yeah but I HAD a parachrom blue spring' debate in my mind. The thing I would undoubtedly miss, hands down, is the bracelet, particularly the clasp. To me, I wish Rolex would have updated the movements and bracelets and left it at that and not went with the chunky case. What say you guys - flip for the exp2? Buy the exp2 and have both? (Or - brush down the PCLs and try that in a possible irreversible move? Not really irreversible but still drastic.....) Help! I've never had this issue before when I wore my sub date. (Don't want to go back there because my ex wife got me that watch!) Mike. |

For me, i would keep the GMT II C. I just think its awesome and ranks equally with my Sub-C as my favorite in the lineup.
Maybe get add a white dialed EXP II to give yourself variety |

I would sell, but then again I don't like the GMT-c and I am a biasad 16570 fan. You could also consider to get a 16710 GMT2 with aluminum bezel inserts and classic case (comes with 3186 in some cases if that for some reason is important to you). Looks about 100 times better than the ceramic one IMO. Good luck deciding

I would have both if financially viable. I have a black 2001 P Explorer II and a Sub C. It's a nice combo of new and old...er..

I have the GMTC and the new 42mm Explorer.
Very similar, yet very different.

Welcome to TRF.
I like my GMTIIC. However if you don't then get one you do like.

I am wrestling with the same issue. I am considering selling or trading my GMTIIc for a new style 42mm Explorer White dial. I already have a SubC, SubLV and thought the new Exp42 would make a nice contrast to my existing watches...

Go with what your heart tells you. If the GMTIIc doesn't make you smile anymore, flip it.
Good luck! |

To be brutally honest there isn't a snowballs chance in hell I'd trade a GMTII C for the new Exp II.Then again it's your watch so do what makes YOU happy. I never understand these threads. I mean you didn't ask total strangers who you should marry or date.

IMHO the GMT IIc and the previous model Explorer are in 2 completely different leagues (due to all the upgrades on the IIc)... Again, just my opinion but I think you will miss your GMT. I for one would not do this, perhaps as mentioned adding it as a 2nd to have some variety, I think this is the best idea

I can totally relate to your feeling. I got my GMT IIc last year & I really wanted to love it, but it just never really spoke to me the way I thought it would. I always found it a little too big & clunky - the lugs felt too wide & the crown looked too big, and also the PCLs just didnt work for me either. I saw a polar exp II in the wild shortly after I got the GMT & I did a double-take. I had never seen one in person. I just got a polar exp II of my own (thanks Tony!) and I am now seriously considering offloading the GMT. The exp wears so much easier, both because of its smaller size & lighter weight, and also the brushed bracelet. flip away my friend. I am not going to be far behind!
let me also add that my exp has the 3185 & I couldn't care less about parachrom blah blah. don't forget, before that thing came out, we were being told how fabulous the Breguet overcoil blah blah. the 3185 is a fine fine movement. You can get a very nice exp II and about 2k in your pocket from that GMT. no need to overpay for the exp. and of course we're not talking about the new exp II. of course. I mean seriously. no. we're talking about the 16570 |

No need to keep the GMT if you're not feeling it.
Personally I love it.
Give the new Exp2 a shot and see how it goes. Try it on first and see if it's calling you.. |

Wow you guys have given a lot of great input - I really like this forum.
For a while, I used to troll (believe it or not) another forum and then I found this one! Anyway - I think what I should do, is buy the old model explorer 2 and then see which one stays with me. I would venture to guess I would like the GMT2c a lot more with brushed links. Also - if I had the talent to trim down the lugs, that would be the finest watch in Rolex's lineup! I just can't figure out why they blocked up the lugs like that? If you look at the Milgauss, it's case is much more proportional, but somehow, when they got to the GMT2c, they said, "ah, what the heck, let's add some bulk!" I'll admit - the thing is probably bullet proof, but it isn't any stronger, really, since the bracelet still connects at the same width? I don't know. I just know I feel somewhat like a rap star walking around with it in a way I never felt with my sub. Terrific watch, awesome piece, just evokes some strange emotions/feelings. By the way - you guys are awesome on this forum! |
