Learning to be Happy with What I Have

Reading this forum on a daily basis puts me in a constant state of "W.A.S." - Watch Acquisition Syndrome. Each day, I read about someone getting a new Rolex and I want to join the party. I ask myself ... "Should I get a ND Sub, even though I've got a Black Bezel GMT?" "Should I get a DJ even though I've got a DD?" "Aluminum Bezel or Ceramic?" "Should I get a Polar Exp. II?" It's enough to drive one NUTZ!

Tonight, I had an epiphany; to wit: I am blessed with two amazing Rolexes which essentially fulfill all of my watch needs. With the exception of my grail watch (i.e., a Platinum DD with glacier blue dial), I'm really happy with my modest collection of 2 Rollies. I realize now that I keep letting myself get caught up in the vicious, but wonderful cycle of watch renewal ... I'm so happy that others get their new toys that I want a piece of that action again and again. It's addictive and can prove to be expensive. So, I've decided that I should be thrilled with what I have and, with the exception of the grail, need to TRY (emphasis added) to refrain from getting swept up in the whirlwind of new watch acquisition. It will be hard for a WIS, I know, but I think it's necessary in an effort to retain my sanity and my bank account. Wish me luck.

I don't think that there's anything modest about your collection.

It's not the quantity, but the quality and you have two very desirable pieces.

Congratulations!

Sigh.... I tried too Tridor.... Saw the new EX II, I looked something like this:

Must... Resist.... resist.... no... no buy new Rolex... resist....

But... alas, I fell off the wagon... And bought it.

(REALLY HAPPY I did by the way ) Good luck with our resistance!

In all honesty I'd find it hard to consider another Rolex after getting a Tridor but I know what you feel! Your post was great and I wish you good luck!

Good luck..

It's hard to appreciate what you have if you're worried about what's next.

I had baaaaaaaaaad WAS last year and too be honest I didn't really get to appreciate them all because as soon as I had bagged one, I was hunting for another......

But I think I have just about managed to get it under control.... although having said that..... I met Jed twice last week when he was over in London (not a wise move for a recovering WAS afflicted WIS ) and may have a new one lined up. Well at least I got through January without a new Rolex...... !!!

Easy to get caught in the chase for a new one for sure. I am at a point where I really only have a few I would still want to have in my collection. Stepping away from TRF helps to avoid getting caught up in everyone's joy of a new rolex. Good job putting things in perspective and avoiding the kryptonite! LOL.

I know exactly what you mean. My sub suits all my needs. I constantly try to critique it so I can search for something new. There's just something about the rush of searching, buying and waiting.

I'm also trying to not get caught up in the Rolex addiction. I just purchased my first and I think my wife would kill me if I even broached the topic of buying another Rolex. My grail is the JustABreathAway DDII. Maybe one day I could somehow get my hands on one, but $30k at this point in my life (2 years removed from grad school) is unattainable.
