ND SubC
I very much love my 14060M ND Sub. The symmetry and simplicity of the dial is perfect.
While I'm a "don't break what's not broken" faithful and love the existing features of the Sub, I also appreciate the modern features found on the new models: beefier lugs/case, maxi dial, blue lume, solid links, glide lock clasp, etc. In short, I'd love to see Rolex roll out a No Date SubC at BASEL 2012. Recently, I disassembled/oiled/reassembled my practice ETA 2824-2 movement for (I hope) the last time in a long while. You get sick of working on the same movement for months. For those curious, I'm moving on to an ETA 7750 chrono as my practice movement. I also need to start working on an ETA Quartz movement. Anyways as a graduation of sorts, I decided to recase my 2824-2. What better style than a ND SubC right? Here's how: - buy a SubC style case - buy and install generic dial/hands onto 2824-2 movement - replace the cyclops crystal with a non-cyclops crystal along with new gaskets for the case - pull crappy old tube and install new tube, stem, and crown - assemble and waterproof test (checked to 3ATM - need to buy a leak tester) Yes, the 2824-2 movement has a date complication. It's still there and you can hear the date click over at midnight but it's hidden under the dial - I didn't want to bother removing the date parts on the movement (I may want to reuse the movement in the future so keeping all the parts together was important). I know some of you will object that it's a "fake" but it has no Rolex markings on it and it's entirely a fictional watch as no such model exists today. More importantly, I assembled the entire watch from scratch so it's mine! Just so I'm clear, it's not for sale and I won't make one for others... If you want to learn how to build one yourself, I'd be happy to share what I've learned (highly recommend Fried's book). Here's the finished product (running +3s): Ok I'm ready, flame on!! |

I like the 14060 better. I think this breaks everything you like about it, balance, flowing lines, etc ... it just does not look simple anymore ...
Cheers for the effort and impressive skills!! My skills barely include unscrewing the crown to wind it ....

Its not bad, I just wish it had a domed crystal like the DSSD.
In fact I just wish Rolex made the DSSD exactly how it is but with a 40mm case like the Subc |

It sounds so simple, even a caveman can do it
On a serious note, great job. I love the look. My Sub ND is so comfortable and practical I really like it. I am toying with the idea of buying a "Hulk" Sub C but if they were to release a new Sub ND with the Maxi dial, new lume and bracelet I think I would buy one. Great post and thanks for sharing.

thats so cool.
i;d call it a "sterile watch" rather than a homeage, as it has no any brand name on it. |

I enjoyed reading this one and seeing the results. Where did you get a maxi dial without any markings? I'm sure the bracelet has Rolex markings on it, right? Where did you get a coronet-less crown?

Nice job Mike!
Does kind of make me realize how much I've become accustomed to seeing all the markings that are on most of our watches.

I like the more narrowed and tapered lugs on your watch than those on SubC

That's pretty interesting. How much do you have in it (not including your time of course)? That would be a fun project.

MIKE!!!! True story dude that is a rocking timepiece! Only if there were enough hours in the day for me to embark on such a project I would be all over it! The farthest I have gone in creating anything was stealing Puffy's seafood (Julia Child) recipe, you my friend have just taken our hobby to the next level... A+

That is incredible. Congratulations on your skills! Certainly makes for a great conversation when someone asks you what kind of watch you have. Being able to say you made it yourself is more impressive than saying "it's a Rolex" IMO.
I used to work with a guy who made custom golf clubs for his friends and coworkers. It was considered a great privilege to have a set made by him. You could do the same making custom watches! I got the TimeZone's online course toolkit for Christmas of 2010 but haven't gotten around to taking their course. You have inspired me to do it now. Thank you!
