Finally a ROLEX owner. But I have a concern. . .

Hi all, I recently purchased a Black Dial Explorer II from a reputable AD about 2 weeks ago. This was an early graduation gift for completing my masters degreee. You would not believe how happy I was when I made the purchase!

Today, I was browsing the rolex website because I can't keep my eyes off this watch and wanted to see it professionally displayed. One thing I noticed is that on the rolex website the "night and day" page, the watch displays a "blue glow that lasts up to 8 hours".

I noticed on my watch the color is green and it lasts for like 15 minutes when I shine it in a bright light for 10 minutes. So my question is, should I be concerned? Should I call Rolex and tell them about it? I know the watch is not fake. The jewelery store is authorized and I verified it on the Rolex website.

Thanks for any help!

Did you buy the older style Ex II or the new, 42mm one?

What is the model number on the warranty card/paper?

Yours is likely the 40 mm version that has been discontinued and the Rolex website only shows the newer 42mm version.

Doesn't that have the "new blue-ish lume"?
I don't think any lume lasts that long!!!!

Show a picture please.

Lume lasts a long time at night or in very dark environment although it loses most of intensity within a short period of time. both of my 42 mm explorer II's had blue lumes.

I understand it should glow blue. . . but what should I do about the watch I have? My watch is legit, right? lol. Would rolex service this to make the change? This would be considered a product defect, no?

Your lume is blue, its a weird aqua blueish. So I wouldn't sweat it too much. Rolex lume isn't their strongest point.

I'm sure its really nothing to worry about. I'm guessing the lume really gets lower after about 15 min but in the dark it will stay visalble over night. Charge it before bed and put on your bedside table. I bet in the AM you still have lume. If I go outside my Rolex's will show lume for about 10 min inside then I can't see the lume unless I go in a dark room. Personally I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I know the lume isnt their strongest point, this thread is mainly for ensuring authenticity. I showed it to a few other people, it's definitely greento them as well, not the blue like it is on the website. I tried to take a picture. . . I don't think thats going to be possible. My cell phone cannot capture the watch, it's to dark.

green lume "old style" 40mm
blue lume "new style" 42mm
Yeah all Rolex lume will vary from watch to watch. I suggest you return /exchange it for the new style 42mm model#216570 since you pay retail price, unless you got a great discount.

I charge my watch (diferent lume on a DJ I take it, not really sure) for 10 minutes under a new CFL bulb before hitting the sack in a hotel. It decays quickly but you can still read it 8 hours later in a dark room - it's just not very bright.

I know yoy say its 42mm but that is blue, not green. Seen both and to me not even close to looking green compared to old rolex with actual green lume. Is 24 hr hand red or orange. If orange it's 42mm and lume is blue and you have no worries. If it is really green somethings not right.

Congrats on the new Expy II. I am not sure what light source you are using, but different lights will charge the lume in a somewhat different fashion. I know if I come in from outside and go downstairs, the lume on my 14060M looks like it is on fire. After awhile though, it will slowly fade, but will still be visible. I would say that my lume, regardless of light source, will last a good 7-8 hours.

As far as the color, as several have mentioned, take a picture of your watch after charging the lume, so that we can determine the color. I am certain that your lume is correct.

Congrats on your degree and new purchase.

You are probably mistaken about the color of the glow. It is more of an aqua blueish glow. But it can kinda look more green to some people. If you take a picture of the glowing lume it will look a lot more blue in the picture as well... I'd be willing to bet money that there is nothing wrong with you watch and that the blue color is just not the color you expect...

I don't charge my watches before going to bed. What charging they get is from my being outside and sitting under a fluorescent bulb above my desk.

The lume lasts pretty much all night and all my watches have the Super Luminova, which is green.

If you haven't already done so, maybe leaving the watch near an open window where it can get some serious ultraviolet light for an extended period, you'd get better results, or schedule a day where you can get some serious outdoor time.

Wear it out in the sun for a long time and then go into a dark place - it should be blue.

If it doesn't look blue, it could be your eyes (to some a few colors look different than to others. This happens between me and my wife all the time). You could ask someone else around you what color it looks like to them.

In the worst case scenario that it really is not blue, it should be replaced under warranty by Rolex.
