I always thought more than one was "ya'll." Pfft. This must have been the work of a non-southerner.

Well, not to get overly picky, but:
1 = you 2 = y'all or both y'all 3 or more = all y'all Though I will concede that regional dialects probably do come into play here. ![]() I actually gave some thought to how I talk to my kids before writing this post! "P, do you want to go get groceries with me?: "J and P, do both y'all want to go?" "J, P and V, do all y'all want to go?" Giving this further thought, I wonder where I went wrong. None of my kids even use the term. ![]() |

And another thought.... maybe I should have written "None of my kids even uses the term."
Then again, if it's Southern grammar.... |

1 = You 2-3 = Yous 4+ = All yous .... (add rude adjective) :) |

I was born and raised in the deep south and "all y'all" is certainly used to denote a large group although I've not heard specific numbers assigned to its usage.
Also, please note that the correct contraction is "y'all" for "you all." My elderly relatives who were born in the 19th Century were much more likely to use the term "you all" than they were to use the contraction. I'm not sure why or even if that was wide spread, but it was the case in my family. The sign gets my unequivocal thumbs up. ![]()
