i don't know anything about Patek Phillipe, except they are beautiful and expensive. Now that you've raised the issue: 1) where do you service them 2) are they as sturdy as Rolex 3) do they keep time as well as rolex 4) why do they charge an extra $2k or so for the 'privilege' of a sweep hand? 5) do they hold their value more or less than rolex?

If I were to buy a Patek Philippe as an "everyday beater" watch, it would be the Nautilus Jumbo, and as a dress Patek, I would choose this one:

I thought I would try answering your questions.
1. If I paid that price for a watch, I would choose only to go with their dealers and the company itself, in part, for the practical reason that most of their movements are proprietary and only their own authorized repair network will have the expertise and the parts to fix/service them.
2. I would say no, not in the sense of being able to knock them around as much. Patek watches are stronger performers which last generations though, so in terms of longevity, they are in this sense, even better than Rolex. Remember that Rolex does not finish it's movements nearly as much as Patek.

4. Not quite sure, but my guess is the sweep hand sells better and because of this, they charge more--just maximizing their economic self interest.
5. More, but Rolex is quite excellent too in this regard. No other watch companies perform to the same standard in this department--even Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet, who also make watches of the highest quality. Rolex in this sense performs quite well comparatively. But personally, if I want to invest, I buy stocks or bonds, not watches.

I do not know how they compaire to Rolex in most cases.. I think it is a totaly different beast when it comes to Patek. Other than the Nautilus, they really do not go for the all around sport watch. That is why the Nautilus is so more expencive even in Stainless. They still are keeping with their exclusive pedigree even for a sport watch. It seems that Patek really focuses on dress watches, and does not care about mass appeal or making it be something that the general public will know. Even in their ads they go for a much more subdued cleint base. No storys of races won, mountains scaled or what model this person was wearing when they made their acheivment.

Another reason they are priced higher is there are much fewer of them produced compaired to Rolex. I was told they only make about 30,000 Pateks a year. Others here may have better numbers on this.

It is also true Patek charges for each feature it has. They charge more for an automatic, a second hand and for a date.

As far as servicing, I was told by my local dealer that the servicing is around $900 fo a basic servicing and takes several months. I do not look forward to the day I have to send mine in.
