panerai 289, K series

just bought 289, and I find the "dot indicator" really confusing.....
can somebody please explain step by step to confirm it is functioning properly?
does it relate to home time, or GMT?
I am in ET zone, and it indicates "day" from about 10:00am-10:pm...
my GMT hour hand set 3 hours before main hour hand.

any help greatly appreciated....

The dot indicator is related to the GMT hand rather than the Home time. Normally the indicator start to show ard 6plus am(full ard 8am) and start to disappear slowly ard 7pm.

looks like disk began to show at 6:30 on the GMT hand, and fully indicated at 9:00....
we'll see tonight....

GMT set for West Coast....
