need all the help I can get 1953 explorer

I need all the info I can get. I have a 53 explorer (pre "explorer" markings). It is in a brevet 6298 stainless case and has a dial I have only been able to find one other picture of. I will post a very bad pic of my own. It has no numbers just gold pickets and it has the rolex crown just under the 12 o'clock position and "rolex" under that and then "oyster perpetual" below that. It has daphine hands with a blue sweep second hand and just says "precision" over the 6 o'clock position and "swiss" under it. It is bubble back and still has what appears to be the origional acrylic crystal. Any further info I will be greatful for as well a recomendations on a bracelet and where I may find parts such as gaskets and crown tube as mine is stripped.

Would also like to get a rolex box as well if anyone knows what type of box this watch went in.

the only camera I have at the moment is my old flip phone as my camera is lost somewhere wherever my wife last put it

Crown tube may not be stripped, if it is early 1953 it might still have original Super Oyster Crown tube and crown which was push down not screw down. I understand that these were often changed to screw down durng service. My 1953 6150 pre explorer has push down crown.

Guy H, how can I tell if it is a push down or changed over? It does not have threads on the outside of the tube and I do not know if the inside is threaded. My crown is just the rolex crown symbol and a line under it.

The serial number on mine is 930xxx and is first quarter 1953 as marked on the inside of the case. From the serial number yours would be possibly earler. I have seen various versions of the Super Oyster Crown with different designs. Is there a date inside the case back?

I'm not sure why the 6298 is called an Explorer or "pre-Explorer"? Is it the case size? I do know that I've seen these listed for huge amounts on dealer's websites, for reasons I cannot fathom.

Anyway, that off my chest, I think you have a lovely-looking original. For service I can highly recommend Tommy Taylor in Austin, TX (PM me for his e-mail). He has a bubbleback of mine he's currently tweaking, as well as a new 6085 I'm anxiously waiting to have...got it from Andrew Shear, who shipped it directly to Tommy to service).

they're pretty much the same as the watch that topped everest, after 53 they became oyster perpetual everests or explorers. granted this one dosn't have the 3 6 9 dial, it's still desirable. ones with the 3 6 9 and mercedes hands though command extremely high prices. one with a gilt dial in aweful condition just sold at Sothebys(pretty sure it was sothebys) for $9,000 and it was in very piss poor unrestored condition. but it still ran xD and the dial wasnt the worst

but that one was a pre explorer.

It should tidy up nicely. A good service, clean, new crystal (keep the old one), is all it needs. After some research I had mine done in london - fantastic result. Now keeps perfect time, automatic works, expanding bracelet as smooth as silk. Love wearing it.
