What is a good 1989 birth year watch?

My friend RangerRobbie just joined the forum and was looking for a watch. I gave him a couple of options, but thought he would benefit from the wisdom of the group. If you picked a watch from 1989 to start your collection with, which watch would it be?

First welcome and congratulations on your quest

Although when I saw 1989 I lost a few hairs on my head as I was eight years out of high school then!

But I just completed my search for a birth year watch and it was quite rewarding

I think the choice is the watch that speaks to you if you're looking at a Speed master and I think that's a fantastic choice

Everyone here has their own opinion of their own favorite watch but I think it should be a dial that's pleasing to you and a watch that you will connect with.

Good luck and keep us posted

Look for a Sub. It's timeless and prices for a 1989 should be pretty good.

Hi Robbie, welcome to the forum!

I would try to work with one of the trusted sellers here on TRF as they are always very helpful, and their pricing is tough to beat.

To get an idea of what is out there, I'd visit chrono24 and search Rolex 1989 or Omega 1989.

Good luck!

Excellent idea. 1989 is an important year for you and the right watch to commemorate it. I would suggest a specimen that would celebrate a shared milestone.

That leads me to the Patek Philippe 150th Anniversary Officer's Watch introduced in 1989 at BaselWorld. The Officer’s Watch commemorated Patek’s 150th anniversary and it was the first time a company had produced a truly limited edition watch (2000 numbered specimens). Soon many other Swiss makers followed suit by issuing numbered pieces.

So your milestone is also an important milestone in Patek and BaselWorld history. Sales range from $18,000USD ~ $25,000 depending upon condition, etc.

Since you're asking on a Rolex forum I'd say a Sub or a Sub date although I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the Omega Speedmaster. I guess I'm not being much help am I? A nice sapphire sandwich would be a great! Get what sings to you, good luck!
Oh, welcome to TRF, great bunch here.

You mean purchased in 1989, right?

If you mean assembled in 1989...that might be harder to determine.

L serial with papers dated later in '89 would probably be as close as you could get.

A GMT II Fat Lady. Ended, I think, in 88; however, you can probably find one purchased in 89.

I think A watch purchased in 1989 would be close enough.
I agree the Sub is a timeless classic, never gets old.

Well first you cannot rely on the exact year with any Rolex watch now you want to look for a L serial but that could be 1988 or 1989 made. Its possible to get the last of the 5513 subs in that time frame that's what myself would recommend
