Hands and "Swiss" dial for an Explorer II
A few years ago I bought (from DavidSW) the "older" version of the Explorer II (black dial) before the model went to maxi-dial and orange hands and such.
Later from an ebay jeweler I also found/bought a vintage polar dial "Swiss" and set of hands. My local (non Rolex AD) jeweler swapped these for me, and when I look at things under the loupe at a sharp angle, I notice that the sides of the hands (GMT, hour, minute and second) have what appear to be good paint on tops but the sides appear slightly "speckled" or patina with silver and black. The "speckling" is quite uniform and not at all noticeable until you take the loupe to it. Two questions: 1- Do these sound like aftermarket (non-OEM) hands? 2- I'd take a picture but none of my cameras have good enough macro for it. Does anyone with a good macro and a "Swiss" dialed polar Exp II have any pictures showcasing the sides of the hands on that watch for me to compare and contrast? Thanks in advance, Dave PS Yes, I know putting a "Swiss" dial on my rehaut Exp II is not traditional and disturbing to some, but I like having both dials none the same. |

We can't tell if they are aftermarket from a description unless they were "magnetic" when you put them in
It is possible the edges are beginning to collect the signs of age before the painted and/or polished tops. If you pulled the 24 hr. hand off my guess is it would show similar speckling on its backside.

Your Explorer II paint job is normal..
Only the tops of the white gold hands are painted..

Thank you Larry. Mine look just like those. This site and the knowledge and (more importantly) the willingness to share that knowledge...superb.
