This is my first post on this forum - a Happy New Year to all.

I purchased my (first) Rolex, a SS date sub, in 2005 - I chose that model as I personally believe it is the quintesential Rolex (followed closely by the Paul Newman Daytona... again, my very humble opinion). I'm considering another Rolex purchase for my wife in 2008 and came across this forum during my research.

I don't wear my watch that often (I have a TAG for every day), but reading your posts and seeing your pictures reminded me of what a beautifully crafted timepiece it is and also reinforced to me that I really should wear it more often........ I've since joined the forum and have now worn it every day on my holidays!!

I guess we all have our reasons for owning a Rolex(s) - I bought the watch as a personal reward for achieving a milestone I had set myself in 2004 - to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of starting my own management consulting practice, which is still going strong and growing. Every time I look at my Rolex, it reminds me of the hard work I've put in to my business and the mixed feelings of fear and elation I felt in leaving a secure, well-paying job and striking out on my own. I had an immense sense of pride and success in putting my hard-earned over the counter at the dealer's and slipping that Rolex on my wrist for the first time.

I'm still not sure if I should wear it to work - whilst it gives me a great sense of satisfaction (see above), I worry that my clients will notice and think that I am earning far too much at their expense. I'd like to think it shows that I am good at what I do (like a real estate agent turning up to sell your house in a Mercedes, not a Beetle), but you can never tell - any thoughts?

Welcome man. Wear it with pride. It's not blingy, it's not in your face. It's, as you said, the quintessential Rolex, the perfect, everyday watch. You earned it. And might I add, it's not such an outrageously priced watch. Just shows what a fine judge of quality you are.

As for one for the Mrs, I like the look of the one JJ's wife has. Check out his thread on his family in this forum. Beautiful ladies Yachtmaster.

I'm actually looking at a 'mid-size' Oyster or Date/Datejust, just for something different, but I think I'll have to take her to the dealer for a viewing and try-out.

I can't figure out where folks get the idea that wearing a Rolex, especially a sport model, if pretentious.

Most people you will run across don't even know what a Rolex looks like. Those that can tell a Rolex from a Timex, do so with the understanding of what the time-piece on your wrist represents.. Hard work and excellent taste..

Hi and Welcome! Wear the sub with confidence. Anyone who notices it is more likely to attribute it to your success than you showing off. If your real estate agent showed up in a junker wouldn't you think they were a bad real estate agent?

I'm a big fan of midsize watches, ladies dials are just too small. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

I agree with Tools that most people won't know the difference and when I see someone wearing a Rolex, I think successful and discriminating more than pretensious and arrogant. It's not an apt comparison but I had been saving a bottle of my favorite wine for some time. I'm not a wine buff as such so don't store it properly. So here it is New Years Eve, I pop it open and....spoiled! Just a small example of my flawed philosophy. From now on I'm going to drink the wine, wear the watch, this is a one way trip! I understand. However, my experience in consulting with Fortune 500 companies over a 10 year period showed just the opposite. It made a statement on more than one occasion that I had reached a milestone of success worth being associated with. I believe it will do the same for you.

I have also set a Rolex as my personal reward for much hard work. Reaching it has been very self fulfilling indeed, and I know that when I look at the watch on my wrist it'll only serve to spur me on (let's be honest, we all need a reminder of why we work sometimes). That is why I know I'll be wearing it every day, for no-one other than myself. What others think matters little, and is usually wrong.

Wear it, enjoy it, let it mark the time you have on the Earth!
