The devil is in the detail

Hi all,

I'm seeking a GMT II with a pepsi bezel. A few months ago (before I was a TRF member) I wanted it simply because I liked the stand-out colouring. Now that I've been around the forum a few times and educated myself a bit, I find myself obsessing about details that a few months ago I didn't even know existed.

For example:
Should I care if it was born a pepsi, or is another GMT II with a switched-in pepsi bezel ok?
Is the independent hour hand important to me?
Do I care if there are holes in the lugs?

As I'm sure you know every little detail you care about tends to end up adding to the price. Presumably most of you have been down this road before. so my question is:
Do you buy the one where the details aren't quite right and then in 6 months time you've forgotten the difference between a 16700 and a 16710?
OR
Do you hang on and wait for the perfect (and significantly more expensive) version?

From my personal experience - option 2. You won't forget the difference, and you'll never be satisfied until you have what you really wanted originally. Then you'll buy it eventually anyway, costing you even more money.

Buy exactly what you want, even if it costs a little more or is harder to find. In the long run you'll be saving yourself both time and money.

Yes what he said ^.

The details are what makes collecting/buying/wearing a Rolex fun. As for the lug holes, I highly prefer it, MUCH easier when changing straps.

If you ask any of the collectors they will tell you this answer. Believe me you will be blown away the difference between ok and awesome! That is why most collectors could really careless about boxed sets. It is the dial and hands that make the watch pop! I have purchased ok and awesome and it really is amazing the difference. However like they say buy the seller. Do your research! Be patient and you will be very happy with the outcome for your patience.
Good luck.

I would be patient and wait for the exact one that you want. The wait will be worth it and the hunt will be half the fun.

Getting 75% of what you want isn't a good idea. Just hold out.

Who cares how it was born, you may end up owning all the bezel inserts before you are done.

IF you plan on swapping bracelets..ie oyster to jubilee and maybe to a nato a watch with lug holes is easier. I

If you decide to go with lug holes it may actually be less expensive as those are older watches.

As with any watch buy something in the best condition you can find with the most recent documented service....

Thanks all. Kind of what I thought you'd say to be honest. Still, you've hardened my resolve to hang on.

Hold out for exactly what you want or you'll inevitably end up flipping it.
