Interesting Sales Pitch at AD

So I'm on stay cation this week since NYC hotels are booked solid or 500 per night since the Stanley Cup games are in town. Of course me thinks LA will wrap it up soon if not tonight. Anyway while getting some errands done I stopped into the mall to get lunch and wandered into my AD. I was hoping to see if there was any chance in hell they got some new pieces in but alas no luck.

The salesman knew his stuff it seemed. He was wearing an AP bumblebee as he called it but I know nothing about AP. he said it is a top end and rare piece.

I've been dabbling into getting my grail DayDate for a while and think it would be a better purchase than what my father refers to as a male menopause car which would be a Corvette or something. Here is where it got interesting. I was looking at one they had and he goes on a rant of don't even think about a DayDate. They don't age well or hold their value at all. If spending that much I should get a different sport watch and yea they carry AP and PP as well. Very interesting sales pitch. I figure if spending that much on a watch I'm not so sure of venturing off into another brand I'm not familiar with. Don't get me wrong AP and others are really nice but watches are very individualized in preferences. Oh well you learn something at an AD once in a while huh?

Look at the PPs he got and see what he comes up with. You cant be certain what he could find.

AP and PP--yeah pinnacle of watches, I'd grab one (or two...or three...or four ).

But different price point vs Rolex.

Rolex is a great brand and always rock solid watch in my book.

Or hit the border guard over the head, knock him/her out, and run if it is a platinum piece...

I wish I could afford a classic 69 Stingray. New ones I like but the cheese factor I've been told is alive and well.

The PP line-up might be worth a look - if for no other reason than to see what else is out there. Depending on your taste and your budget, you might also want to take a look at ALS and F.P. Journe. FPJ has some amazing movements, but they're not for the feint of budget.

As for AP . . . eh. Something about churning out limited edition models diminishes the brand as a whole, IMHO. So, as soon as I saw the Arnold Schwarzenegger LE ROO, I knew I'd never buy an AP.

Look at his PP line. And see what discounts he is offering. Tell him APs are okay but you want to move up a level, to a Rolex or PP. Should get a rise out of him.

One interesting thing I have gleaned from retail people is their disdain for customers. Perhaps he was just quietly amusing himself to recommend other things.
I would love to be a fly on a wall at an AD just to hear all the amusing conversations that go on.
Last time I was in an Rolex boutique (in Hong Kong) a person walked in and pointed to a watch and asked what brand is it. The salesman however was very polite.

Well it shows Rolex moving into self-owned boutiques has a good reason behind it.
Psycho-babbling salestrons trying to move other brands when customer asks for Rolex...

Rare? I don't think so. Uncommon maybe but hardly rare. The BB is one of my favorites though. AP and PP are great brands but you need to assess for yourself if they're the right watches for you.

i am by no means an expert but i know a fair amount about a lot of the "main" watch brands. i have yet to meet an associate at any local AD that knows as much about watches or models as i do. im mainly talking about simple things such as watch diameters and in house or eta movt's etc.

Except that they do not own or operate the boutiques.

Yes you're correct. Sorry, my mis wording - should have said "exclusively Rolex" boutiques.

Rolex will forever be the Premier Brand. Sorta like a Gold Coin it can trade anywhere in the world. I myself have never owned any watch but a Rolex. It never goes out of style they work like a German Tank.

While the details of the sales pitch translate to "blah, blah, blah" in my ears, I do think it's valid to consider that at the price point of a DD, the door to a lot of other options are opened.

Ultimately, of course, get what you want. For me, part of making sure I'm truly happy with my purchase is exploring all the alternatives.
