White Gold and Platinum Logic

Ok. So my question is, why would anyone buy a white gold or platinum watch? I mean it looks exactly like a Stainless Steel watch. Why won't you just buy a SS watch which is less than quarter of the price and looks exactly the same. Ok so I'm sure it feels different. But just for the feel? I understand the RG or YG versions because it not only feels but also looks completely different than a SS.

Because they are a precious metal and ss is not. I gotta be honest though, I don't really get gold and pt sports watches

Personal glorification.
To me its more of a personal symbolism of accomplishment.
If one is concerned about others "knowing" that his watch is "x" metal and "y" value, he might as well buy a blinged out watch.
Somewhat of a "because you can" type of situation.

On a side note, there is also a different feel to each metal.
While to the untrained eye the difference is minimal. There is some difference.

You can also throw in the exclusivity factor...

I guess it's the satisfaction the wearer receives that comes from knowing what it's made out of.

Funny thing, I was listening to the radio the other day and they were discussing the merits of purchasing/wearing real vs. fake jewelry. Many don't understand why people would bother to spend the money on anything authentic when fake looks just as good. This included diamonds, purses, watches etc. So while you question gold, some people question why you would wear a REAL Rolex period. It's all relative.

White Gold and Platinum Logic

Some Rolex models are only available in WG or Platinum, eg the blue Sub, the Daytona, and the new Pepsi GmtC.

I like these 3 a lot, the colors on these 3 are really nice, and I would buy them in a heartbeat, but they are really expensive.

I need to do some planning....👍

I think some may get them because of the knowledge it is a precious metal and also may think the return may be greater than a steel watch.

Yes the feel. Folks that purchase white gold or platinum are doing it for themselves and not to flaunt gold... The weight is amazing (platinum and white gold not bad either). Frankly very few will notice the watch and even less know it is gold.

IMO folks with $$$ will purchase WG/Platinum over Yellow/Rose...

Yep, that's how I'd do it if I wanted to rock a model on a bracelet. For a dress watch on a nice leather strap any shade of gold or platinum would do just fine.

Yes, absolutely because of the feel of the watch. It is that simple. I know when I put on my platinum watches there is substance there and I love it. Platinum is also the most hypoallergenic metal for sensitive people

The weight is radically different. A platinum Daytona is twice as heavy as a stainless one. You can't fake that without making the watch out of something very dense. Tungsten would get you there, but that's not what Rolex is up to.

You might also ask why pay more for a mechanical movement, or for a watch with an unusual history, or for a real Rolex for that matter. There are cheaper alternatives that look the same.

it not just the feel, white gold has a yellow tinge/hue, platinum has its own ting/hue different than ss, they can be told apart, not to mention the weight, personally all that aside, you know you are wearing precious metal and that make me happy, i could care less what other see and think

If you have to ask, you won't understand. WG and platinum are not for you.

Aside from the weight, I think some of the best looking Daytona dials aren't available in SS. A lot of this is "because I can" and "because I want to" so practical logic doesn't apply. If it did, there would be no rational explanation for any Rolex or luxury watch because an entry-level Tissot, Hamilton, or Seiko tells time just as well.

My iPad pics will never do the watch justice, but platinum has such a brilliant luster, brightness and weight, nothing like steel or gold! Even so, my SS Rolex and Tudor watches are among my favorite. Like everything in life, it's all about personal taste and what fits!

I'm sure many non WIS folks would ask why someone would pay 8k for a stainless steel watch. It's all a matter of perspective and personal taste. If I could afford it, I would go for a plat day date in a heartbeat! 👍

I don't own any precious metal watches so I can't speak to that but I would imagine its similar to the reason why I drive what I'd consider a "sleeper" car...

To most people my E63 is just another 4 door old man luxury car... but little do they know it has 507HP under the hood and can easily take on many sports cars (at least in the straight line )

So not everybody wants to flaunt what they have... some of us like being under the radar. If I ever buy a gold watch it will most likely be a WG model

The WG and Plats always feel softer, warmer, gentler than the SS version, besides some colors combination are only available this way. And I do love the undercover value, sneaky way to "talk" to other watch geeks (like the AMG, M, or R/S versions of German sedans/convertibles/wagons)...

The two logics to it in my opinion are (I'm not being sarcastic or rude btw),

1) They like the concept of WG or PT as the saying goes 'horses for courses'.
2) They have the financial means to acquire it.

The purchase will not take place if one of the above logic is missing.

Reluctantly I agree...what I mean is I have gone twice to buy a WG piece and come away without one. Love the feel initially and then the smile goes. It just didn't put a stupid grin on my face like it does when I strap on any of my three YG models.
I had a car analogy - I traded a BMW 7 series years ago for a beautiful Lexus. I knew it was a fantastic car...superb quality etc. Did it put a smile on my face though like my BMWs or Jags have....no. WG watches have the same effect on me...I want to Love em but just keep going yellow. Now I love everyone else's.

Platinum is hard to fault. White gold being contrived is arguable at best, but hey this is a hobby of passion. It's no more silly than buying an SS patek or even Rolex. The price is high, pay to play. Money is useless anyways

Can a similar logic be extended to buying an authentic rolex vs a very good fake. They both will look exactly the same in the eyes of an average Joe. Also assuming they use a reliable ETA movement, so accuracy will be decent. But like in the watch documentary "Time machine", you will know, and I can't deal with that. You will be satisfying others, rather than yourself.

I love whitegold & platnium pieces but do not own one yet, the majority of people wont look at your watch anyway, the ones that know will spot it anyhow and that is what drawn me to it...

I think the WG is under the radar and you do not have to always look over your shoulder when leaving a mall etc..... Yellow Gold is an eye catcher and might cause to much attention.

Which platinum or WG Rolex looks exactly the same as the SS one? (except one old DJ)
