Removing bracelet; chance for scratches?

i need to get a couple watches appraised for the insurance company, since the current list price is about double what i originally paid.

trouble is, the local AD who does this has to verify the serial numbers (which is probably a good thing) and wants to remove the bracelet and perhaps the backs as well.

if they have a good jeweler, should i be concerned about this? anything i should be on the lookout for?

one watch is a DD Pt so i dont want ANYONE screwing it up. and if this isnt a good idea, i will just send it to RUSA for a service when it comes up shortly - i believe the serial number will come back on the new warranty papers.

I once did it myself, I was very careful, and still I scratched it. An AD should be no problem, since they do it all the time, when they adjust the size for their customers.

I have had my watch bracelets removed before by an AD and they scratched the bottom side of the lugs. Just tell them that you don't want any scratches or tape the watch up yourself and then give it to them. I see nothing wrong with that. Good luck.

I did it myself with minimal damage. I am sure it is second nature for a watchmaker at your AD. For me it was harder to get the bracelet back on

If it has the RolexRolexRolex ring you won't need the bracelet taken off. Scratches shouldn't be an issue with the new bracelets with SELs as they are removed in a different way from the old ones.

Still - there is always a risk but I wouldn't worry. How old is the watch? In the UK you don't need a valuation for a new watch just a receipt...

use masking tape or just plain old cello-tape which is a standard in my little watch kit I use it all the time to change straps and bracelets work a treat.

unfortunately, the only ones that have doubled in price are older than the crb ring.

and all i need is a receipt here too; but then they will only PAY me for what the receipt says, which is about 1/2 the current cost. thats the reason i need the appraisal.

That happened at an AD on both my SS GMT IIc and SS Daytona. The watchmaker managed to scratch the OVERside of the lugs. He used a Rolex "tweezer" tool to remove the SEL's but took them off going upwards instead of letting them go bacwards, towards the caseback. I got him to polish the lugs again, so no harm done. From now on I take extra care, though, reminding the watchmaker not to scratch the lugs.

Even with the AD, make sure they taped the bottom of the lugs since it does scratch. In most cases, this is not a big deal. But if you're particular, make sure to advise them about it. As for the backcase, most AD will not replace the gasket. I think everytime you take of the backcase, the gasket should be replaced for water proof. Keep in mind, AD watch maker do make mistake and sometimes don't handle with care. Just make sure you recognized all the scratches before and after it's done.

In the event that your watch or bracelet get scratches Bergeon make a product # 5444 which comes in three finishes it's a diamond impregnated rubber and it will restore the brushed finish and keep you watch /bracelet looking great.
