For you Randall knife fans
I found this article on the evolution of the Randall 16 dive knife in a 1964 issue of Skin Diver.

Outstanding post Subfiend! Thanks for posting, what a great old article. Vintage Rolex Subs and GMTs just go hand in hand with a Randall!
Make sure on your next dive you have one of those Randalls with the oiled sheath strapped to your leg! And you have a great collection going there. I still need to pick up a Model 17 Astro! |

I grew up diving off the coast of New Jersey, back when you could dive with a wetsuit as your only thermal protection, in any color you wanted, as long as it was black, and with a crowbar and hammer strapped to your side. Water temp was always cold and colder, and the visibility was always better the day before you got there. It was always nice to be able to see your hand in front of your face. Eventually I got a real job and discovered the joys of travel. Now I dive all over the world, preferably in warm water, with 60-100 feet of visibility.

I just took delivery of two more Randalls today -- a Model 17 Astro and a Model 16 Diver. Photos to be posted soon.

That is a Randall Model 14 "Attack." The steel is stainless 440B.

I am just in awe of your new Model 17!!!! That one has been on my list for awhile. How do you like the hollow handle?

What a cool thread! Subs, GMTs, Speedys and Randall knives.
NICE. I've always admired the Randall knives, but never got around to getting one. Thanks for posting. |

The hollow handle is small but practical. Just enough room for some fish hooks and a few waterproof matches. It's the opposite of my Model 18-5.5, which is a lot heavier in the handle. The Model 17 is all blade.

July 2nd was a long time ago. Since my last post in this thread I have acquired two new Randall knives, a Model 7 for my son and a Model 5 for me as a companion.
My son made the transition from childhood to adolescence this summer, so I bought him his first "real" knife as a birthday present. He really loves it. Cheers! ![]() ![]() ![]()
