Arrived my new explorer II
Hi everyone. Felt like sharing a photo of my new watch. For me it feels as my first serious collectible watch even though I have owned vintage subs and GMT:s in the past. Mainly because it is in really nice original condition. Dare I say it. The case looks like it could be unpolished but I'll leave that for the experts to comment.
This is for me the best condition to enjoy vintage watches. You can see it has seen the world and has some memories from the explorations of the previous owner but still has the proportions that it had when it left the factory. Also as I plan to use it everyday this is great. If the watch would be nos example I wouldn't dare to use it. I caught the vintage rolex bug something like two years ago and have since flipped 16 watches (this is starting to hear like an AA meeting). This is the first time I don't feel theres any need for that since the explorer is personal enough. For the watch geek it tells that I know my watches and for the rest it flies nicely under the radar. Now its time to take a little break from the watch world. Maybe I'll return to the hunt if I have some significant achievement in my life but don't really feel need for it. ![]() One idea I have toyed with in my mind is to take the watch to ABC and have them repaint the orange hand. But I'm sure everybody here is against that. :) |

Very nice! I wouldn't touch the orange hand. It looks great as is.

There's some awesome patina in that there watch.
By the way, has it ever bothered anyone else that the 1655 is routinely described as being 40mm across, when it's really 38-39mm? Definitely smaller than a 5513 or 1680.

I have seen subs described also as 39mm. I think it feeling smaller is more to do with the ss bezel than the size of the case.

Congratulations, Toni. The 1655 was my first vintage piece and holds a special place in my collection for that reason. A true vintage classic. Enjoy and wear in great health.

Veddy nice! Looks like a MK4 dial with MK3 bezel. Don't you dare paint the 24H hand!!! Which, per the Explorer booklets back, were actually red.......

Amazing!
I've only seen one 1655 in person, and it's my watchmakers daily 'beater.' I say beater based on the collection he showed me that I've only ever read about. The 1655 and his Comex SD were two of my favorites. He also had a NOS 5508. None were for sale. |

Wow. Stunning patina. The tritium almost looks like a salmon color. Beautiful! And if you touch that 24-hour-hand, I'm coming to Helsinki to track you down. Congrats!
