Cool read. My in laws are a little bit nosy and are the type to ask, "how much is that?" without hesitation. And then pass opinions on how I should be spending my money. Pretty much a cultural and generational thing. I only wear a Panerai or Breitling in their presence, they don't know those brands. :-).

People buy a Rolex for many reasons... Yes, even to be "seen" and display a certain opulence, to use the author's words. However, just a quick scan of his blog tells me he is a watch enthusiast himself. I think this piece is written by a watch enthusiast for watch enthusiasts. I would say the vast majority on TRF, myself included, could not care less what others think about our watch...we appreciate long lasting quality, tradition and precision... That just so happens to have Rolex stamped on the dial. And, as he says, that's ok, no matter what the in-laws say at Thanksgiving.

What the article suggests to me is that a Rolex says very little about who is wearing it.

The wearer could be a reverend, an explorer, or a despot... or a dentist, or an engineer, or a lucky high school graduate. The wearer probably isn't dirt poor but beyond that I would quit making guesses and just appreciate the watch for what it is.

When Lyndon Johnson wore a Datejust, the watch’s nickname morphed into “the Rolex President.”

So how did it then morph to mean the Day Date? I assume LBJ's DJ came on a President band and since that band is now only on the DD, the nickname switched to that model. Probably the only watch nicknamed after the bracelet it comes with.

95% of people don't have a clue what a Rolex looks like. Of the remainder maybe 1% are WIS leaving 4% who only know Rolex fluted bezel models. If you are wearing a sub or GMT only WIS know what it is, IF they get close enough for a look.

What I'm saying is no one is judging you if you're wearing a Sub because they don't know or care what it is. It's a bit different to driving a Benz or Beemer because everyone knows what they are.

Now I'll open that second bottle of red.

For me it's entirely personal. I like it, I like that it'll be around while I still am still be working while I'm disintergrating. The only people that have ever noticed that I wear a Rolex are other Rolex owners.
For me it's one of the virtually unique mechanical thinks that seems to integrate with the human soul. I can only think of a Leica camera and a good few cars that do the same thing.
