Watch for a nine year old?
My nine year old came down today and held out his moms 18k ladies president and said "can you make the band smaller?"
I love the fact that he is interested in watches, so we jumped on line and started looking. Can you say sensory overload? I'm looking for a 27mm-35mm watch with an automatic movement, we spent some time looking at Seiko 5's. Is there a better option or just go with the Seiko. Based on his size a ladies watch makes the most sense but do you have any idea how many watches are available on the net, tons. This isn't a huge expense but I would like to find a watch that if he doesn't loose it could be in his jewelry box thirty years from now when he has a child of his own to say, my daddy bought me this when I was nine and it still works...... I have over twenty five watches to hand down so this isn't about birth year, or making him look like a spoiled brat at school. I want to buy him a Chevy, Renault, Fiat that will last him a life time in the sense that it's worth keeping. I don't care that it is the best, he will get that in do time. I want a decent auto with a chance to be passed on. Thanks all.

My old man worked for Armitron so it was a-watches for me as a kid. And I loved every one if them. I wish I still had a few.

I probably wouldn't want a 9 yo to be thinking too much about watches. Particularly ones to hand-down to his kids.
By mid to late teenage however, any interest will generally be evident and a quality watch makes a great graduation present, with a better chance it will survive long enough to eventually be handed down to the next generation.

If you want an automatic, get him a Swatch Sistem51. They have a clear caseback so he can get an idea of how the movement works, too.

As said above, Sistem 51 is a great option. However, I feel your initial instincts are right with the seiko 5. Fantastic watch that will last forever and outstanding value.

They definitely have their place and Seiko 5 watches are a lot of bang for the buck. I have a friend who's still wearing one he bought in the Seventies and it looks like new and runs very well. Of course, he takes very good care of it.

Based on what you're looking for, Seiko is the way to go IMO. The Sistem51 has some interesting design schemes but I feel that it is too playful. If your son was drawn to the 18K (I assume it was YG?) Then he may also just be attracted to the finish.
I have an 8 year old nephew and my wife often lets him wear the watches around when we visit. He has an appreciation for them and is very curious to learn and understand the world of watches. For Christmas we are getting him this: http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNKK52-A...s=seiko+5+gold I've had it in the past, and I currently own the Silver Stainless version of it. Accurate, light, clear case-back, cheap and of course, a little history behind it. |

Yes. At that age, it's probably a bigger deal to have a watch just like their peers. Swatch is huge in the tween market. I had them at that age (~30 years ago) and they're still around and popular. That should tell something about the brand.

Swatch sistem51 is a great option, also Seiko 5, maybe orient or a Seiko SKX013 which is the smaller diver (at 38mm).

I got my son a Swatch Flik Flak, on a woven nylon strap when he was 5, then at 9 G-Shocks, digital & analog, rubber straps.
Now at 24 he wears my old Seiko dive watches, quartz & mechanical from the 80s & 90s....& a cool ss Citizen explorer looking watch his girlfriend gave him.
