Is there a Platinum Fluted Bezel DayDate?

As some of you know, I am in love with the DayDate.
It just oozes luxury, while being bulletproof in day to day activities.

If I had to choose between fluted and smooth, I would go fluted everytime. Yet, all the DD's I've ever seen in platinum have only been produced in smooth. What I would do for an ice blue dial and fluted bezel.....

Is it due to difficulty machining it? Or do they do this to differentiate from WG?

I bet they could do it in a heartbeat if they wanted to, I like the smooth bezel though.

They do it, as you said to differentiate from WG! You can always put the ice blue dial on a WG Model!

I think the effort to machine the platinum might have something to do with it as well. It is not an easy PM to work with.

If they can machine the caseback in platinum then they can do a fluted bezel.

They say it to do with the difficulty working with platnium. It has never existed

Yes they say plat is hard to work with, and the price would become astronomical as plat pieces already command a huge premium.

Is there a Platinum Fluted Bezel DayDate?

They do what they do for reasons we mere mortals would never understand.
Or at least that's what they believe.
Yes it can be done and it could be forged if they cared to do it - so no "tooling" needed except for what they already do to machine the inner lip and bottom.

Excuse my ignorance, but can't they make the bezel off a mold instead of machining it?

I've wondered the same thing. I'm with you, I prefer the fluted over smooth bezel.

I have always found it funny that they offer the smooth bezel on the opposite ends of the scale, the cheapest steel DJ II and the most expensive platinum DDII. Not sure why no platinum fluted bezel though. Everyone knows that platinum is a very hard metal to work with, they can sure cast the bezel but may be it would be hard to finish (polish) due to the intricate edges of the fluted bezel.

Not a fan of the smooth either. Fluted bezel really finishes off the watch

not that the PT Day-date is in the cards for me, but I would absolutely love it with a fluted bezel.

If they cast it in platinum, it would be impossible to polish it and get the sharp fluted design. That has to be machined. I would imagine they don't do a fluted platinum bezel not because they can't , but because it would wear terribly. Platinum is far denser that gold, but much more malleable. The sharp edges on a fluted bezel would get destroyed very quickly IMO

The current bezel is machined, as is the case, bracelet, clasp, etc. The case machining is complex and very precise. The reason can't be they don't know how to machine platinum. Similarly, if Pt was so soft that the fluting would wear, the case and bracelet wouldn't last ten minutes. Owners here don't report any excessive wear issues with their Pt watches.

I think the speculation that it separates the watch from white gold is more plausible. But who knows, it's Rolex.

What would a Pt watch look like with a White Au bezel out of curiosity?

I was thinking that since the SS DJ uses a WG bezel.
I guess in this price point, you can't have mix/match metals.

Good question and one that I have wondered many times.
I have always been a fan of the fluted bezel, imo it finishes of the watch perfectly.
Not that I am in a position now to buy a platinum piece, but if they had done one many years ago, fitted with the fluted bezel, then yes it would have been a possibility

Your point seemed to be that platinum wouldn't survive on a fluted bezel due to malleability and excessive wear. Platinum is 50% harder than gold (Pt ~ 4-4.5). No one complains about the case edges on their Platona's or DD's wearing quickly. So, what was your point?

It's smooth/different so WIS's will know immediately that it's Pt. I'm sure Rolex could machine 3D zodiac signs around the bezel if they were so inclined.

HA! My design wishlist is at the extreme other end of the design spectrum.

I want Rolex to come out with a smooth bezel platinum Day-Date and NO HOUR MARKERS of any kind; just a plain face with "Rolex" & "Day-Date" being the only adornment.

That, me thinks, would be a classy watch.

Somebody Photoshop that up for me, 'kay? :D
