Which of these 16800s is preferred?
Hi guys,
after my GMT fiasco, I am in the market for a submariner with patina. The following are my options, looking to make a decision soon. I am totally unsure about which of these I should be buying. Option 1 - luminous markers at 10 and 11 are said to be slightly chipped Option 2 - serviced Option 3 - not serviced, somewhere between plus/minus 15sec/day Option 4 - the least patina but perhaps the most honest watch? http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=474856 So looking forward to your thoughts! |

1 and 2 are out for me- I don't like the white gold surrounds.
Therefore 3 or 4 are the winners. I'd need side by side comparisons to make a final call. |

4 bc the seller is just awesome and it's the strongest watch without a story out
Of the four. I'd personally wait for one more interesting, but I prefer a spider dial Personally. |

The seller has been great so far, indeed.
I do like the more creamy look of option 3, though. Wondering why the date wheel is so much whiter than on option 4, considering the difference in patina on the dial... The seller of option 4 suggested the possibility that option 3 could have re-lumed hands to match the dial. In any case, option 3 is not well priced. |

I can't tell you if all is correct. But for me the patina on No.3 is the best looking and also not a fan of WG surrounds

3 looks the best. If the hands have been matched they have done a great job!

Either 3 or 4, but just from the pics alone, I like 3 with 4 following a close second.

3 'cause its patina is fantastic / dead sexy. +15 secs a day is just a matter of regulation / servicing

3 is my choice.
Don't like the hands on the 4. Also the dark patina on 3 will fade with continued exposure to the sun.

Just personally speaking, I think the patina on 3 is too yellow to believe. Or, another way of putting it, it just looks fabricated to me.
But, more than that, and practically speaking, I don't know anything about the store that is selling 3. The seller who is selling 4, Kirill, however, has a top-notch reputation here and sells a lot of fantastic pieces. And as the old adage goes, one should "buy the seller" *and to be sure, I LOVE patina'd watches, but occasionally I'm finding "too yellow" too much |

There is a $1200 pricing difference between 3 and 4.
I am going for the lower priced option 4 most likely. |

Just on looks alone I would go with 4 as the patina on 3 looks too good to be true.
Going by seller I'd go with #4. Looks like a bronze datewheel in the #4. Those can easily be replaced.

There is nothing manufactured about the patina on 3. That is how many of those dials from that era ended up. I had 2 16750 take off dial and hand sets from an AD that were replaced in service for that yellowing effect.
Yes there are manufactured patinas...that is not one imho. I think there are better matte dial 16800's for less money out there. |

Ok, quick update. I wanted to go for #4, mostly based on the recommendations for the seller. Unfortunately, international payment with these amounts did not go well with my bank, I ran into quite some hassle that I could not solve in time. Although the seller let me know he was disappointed with me as he had made arrangements for delivery through a friend, he acted helpful overall and my experience was a positive one in general.
Due to these payment difficulties, I went for #3. Despite the seller being less reputable, the watch looks just as good, if not better in my eyes. If anyone's interested, I'll post better pictures once I have it in my hands. Thanks for everyone's input! |
