Cost of servicing sea dweller
Hello everybody I'm new to this forum, but share the same interest in Rolex watches, I own two. I have a GMT I pepsi and the SD. The reason I'm here is to find out why it's costing so much to service my SD--$1071 for general cleaning although part of it is replacing the dial. They say the tritium has lost it's glow. Should I request them to leave it alone because it may affect the value of the watch from the standpoint of originality or is that not an issue? From what I have read the new dials only say swiss made at the bottom of the dial not what mine reads which is swiss-T25. Thanks

Hi Watchman1,
Welcome to the Forum. Can you tell us how old the SD is. Is this it's first service? Do you have any pix?

Yes, it's a "S" model bought about 12 years ago, and this is its first service.

Guess I better call Rolex tomorrow to cancel that. Maybe they're smart enough to keep it as much original as possible. I don't really know.

here is your cost Breakdown:
$871 -- For letting ROLEX do it. $200 -- For actual labor It could have been done at many reputable service places for less than half... |

Get it serviced, but leave the dial alone IMHO. The value of the watch lies in the dial, unless you prefer a brand new look. If that is the case, you should change the case as well.

There are two schools on this.
Purists will say to leave it original as they do not make the tritium dial and hands any more, therefore, like an old original model "A" it will retain value. Another school says that you want your watch to be as modern and updated as possible and a Luminova dial and hands will give you that night-time lume that is missing.. (This would be the Hot Rod Deuce Coupe analogy) With my cars I go with Hot Rods.... With my watches, I am more the purist and would retain the Tritium dial and hands.... I can always find enough light to see it at night somewhere. ![]()

I would leave the dial and hands as they are. Luminosity has never been a strong suit anyway, and the potential collectability loss is something to consider.
I know many will say gloss/trit. dials are a ways down the collectability list, but that is now. Who knows what a future vintage community may think. Anyway, good luck with your decision. ![]() |
