Hey...this is a dumb question but for those that wear there watches in the ocean at the beach, does the sand in the water act as like sandpaper as the sand in the water rub against the watch and give hairline scratches in the polished areas?

NO, but give it a good rinse after to get all the sand out of the bracelet.

Well, yes...and no...

If you stick your hand in the sand, then yes, it will scratch it and get under the bezel making things hard to operate until you get it all washed out..

If you mean the sand or silt that is suspended in the water, then no, it just gets pushed out of the way in the buoyancy of the H2O...

In salt water, the salt is suspended in solution and when the water evaporates afterward it leaves an abrasive film on your watch parts that can scratch or abrade the parts over time..

seawater is 99.99% devoid of sand ... sand stays at the bottom ...only the salt is a danger IF exposed for prolonged periods and not rinsed off ...

Rinse well after use and enjoy! I suppose you could always lock it away in the dark land of safe queens only to be occasionally handled by a silken-gloved admirer

Just be sensible, any polished surface will scratch and rough-up in time, a thorough rinse off will clear away the salt and any loose granules, a quick buff up and she'll be ready for sundowners at the beach bar

Thanks everyone for not getting annoyed by this question. I wear my watch in the pool all the time but havent done so at the beach. I try to keep my watches in mint condition and I was just wondering if the sand in the ocean affects the finish in the polished areas.

I have built sandcastles, surfed, body boarded, snorkeled....just about everything you can do at the beach with my Daytona, TT Sub, GMT IIc and SD and none of them were worse for wear. Just a little rinse and they were fine. You probably do more damaged desk diving than playing in the sand!

I was at a resort in another country last year and was too leary to leave it in the room, even in the safe. So I wore it every day on the beach, in the Ocean... What the other members have said is true, just use common sense and rinse it well after your swim and you should be fine. It's not a stupid question... only I can ask those!

My GMT has been buried in sand/mud/salt, not just saltwater(Great Lakes)/etc.

I understand wanting to keep it looking good, but to me, a nicely worn Rolex looks better than a new one.

Keep the dirty side down!

On my recent venture into the Sea on Holiday, i took a bottle of fresh water with me to thoroughly rinse off afterwards. No problems at all. After all, most Rolex are built for the water

I disagree, sand will cause visible scratches to your rolex, quartz is harder than steel i believe.

My SD has just spent the last 3 weeks on the beach & in the sea

I was there with my 5 year old & he had me in & out of the water all day & playing on the sand for the rest of the time.

It was pristine with no scratches on it before we went & now it looks like it's had a hard life

But it's ok, I buy my watches to wear & seeing the enjoyment on my son's face made it worth it

He's the reason the scratches don't bother me

I wear mine all the time to the beach, pool where ever. Sun lotion goes on (me)first then my watch goes on.

When I'm done swimming I then go into the pool.
Rinse your watch with fresh warm water and pat dry is all you need to do!
Have fun and enjoy your Rolex!

Yeah, I think that's the point here, when I wore mine at the resort I obviously didn't use it to build sand castles or anything, just relaxing on the beach, and swiming in the ocean. Really didn't hurt it a bit. Just use common sense and it will be fine.

Submariner / Dweller no problem they are meant to be worn not parked in a safe. Now on the other hand you might keep that Daytona or Datejust etc out of harms way.
