Question about receiving a Rolex in the US from Canada

Does anyone know if I would have to pay a duty in the US if I am receiving a watch from a friend in Canada (on an even trade, no cash transaction)?

I would think that generally if you are bringing something in to the Country that will stay in the Country, it is taxable.

That is my understanding also. I think one exception is IF you are immigrating into the country and can specify that these are your personal possessions.

Is it being carried in or shipped?

if you do get it across just fine there is a possibility that if it is still under the warranty that it will be void by rolex unless you show a receipt that it was purchase in canada. so make sure he gives you the receipt, if its no longer under warranty who cares, wear it across and you should be fine. i know rolex wants proof of receipt of purchase to make sure you didn't by it in the usa through a black market dealer with an oversea warranty. i don't know if that is true with canada though.

Here in the US, regardless of having a receipt or not, warranty doesn't transfer to the new owner.

My concern is seizure if the watch is shipped.

Here is how a colleague did it when he shipped to USA.

He packed it all up nice and tight, sent it with a decalration of value for insurance purpose, Sent it to his friend as a "warranty repair". His friend was not charged taxes

good point i didn't think of diferent names. there could be a 1 in a million chance he and his friend have the exact same name
