Rolex A.D not allowed to sell over phone?
So I was told by an AD in another state that Rolex has a policy of not allowing dealers to sell over the phone to different states. Is this true?

I bought a Milgauss over the phone 3 provinces away. Agreed on a price. Wired the money. Delivered overnight.

This is true in the UK for both Rolex and Tudor apparently.

I think a number of dealers will not ship if they don't know you as they would rather sell to a local good customer. So instead of telling you this they blame it on the manufacturer.

I was told by a major US Rolex AD that Rolex discourages them from selling over the phone unless the individual has been in your store in the past. Im also quite sure many do it anyways.

I was called today by my AD offering me a watch. I could have purchased over the phone. Maybe it depends if you have done business with them before?

I wanted to buy a pre-owned Tudor from Tarratts in Leicester and was told no due to Tudor policy.

I think it depends on the dealer. The dealer I bought my BLNR from did that. I had to fly to Kansas City from Chicago. I made a weekend trip out of it with my family. Once the inital deal was done in person, the dealer is willing to sell over the phone and ship to me. A few dealers near me said the same thing. But.. I am sure exception can be made.

Many ADs have the policy that they will not talk a deal on the phone - only in person. They can sell, but they won't offer a discount. It's an individual policy, not a Rolex rule, but it is widespread.

Yes, Rolex discourages business dealings over the phone but ironically many sales assistants do give out their business cards to customers after the first meeting at the boutique.
Of course you don't just call them because the conversation would be so awkward , right ? Just use the WhatsApp messaging platform to talk to the SA discretely ! It's a loop hole and surprisingly it works ! At least for me it does ! |

I don't think it's Rolex policy but some ADs certainly play this game. I tried to purchase a BLNR on the phone from an AD where I had previously purchased my LVc after I moved to another state. They would not sell it, take a deposit, or otherwise deal with me unless I was standing in their store.

I am in California and have called a couple AD's in Oregon that were unwilling to do a deal over the phone.

I have a feeling it depends on the watch. For example if you are trying to buy a green Sub over the phone with no purchase history they will probably decline. Think about it, they could easily sell it to someone in person and create a new customer. Now if you are calling about a two tone datejust, they will probably happily take your order over the phone.

Yes.. Rolex does not want AD's to make offers or solicit or give out anything other than MSRP over the phone. How far they carry this is usually up to the individual Staffer, but if you already have a relationship with sales staff, you are in-like-Flynn. They also cannot sell Rolex on the Internet, or have "Blowout Sales" or advertise sales of Rolex beyond saying that they carry them.

Could be store policy.

I would think it largely depends on which model you wanted to buy, even if it is a store policy or even a Rolex policy. There's no real upside for a dealer to sell a watch that will sell easily for list price to an out-of-state buyer when they have a better chance of making a good client out of a local buyer. A diamond bezel PM model and I'm guessing all bets are off and whatever rules the store or Rolex have are somewhat negotiable, as is the price. It really comes down to risk v. reward for the dealer. If the OP was calling on a Daytona C or SS Sky Dweller it's probably just easier for the salesperson to shut down the conversation straightaway with a line about not selling out of state than having to get into a protracted conversation about waiting list, etc. that doesn't change anything for either party.
