Speedy Pro or Explorer I to Complete a Collection?

Hey all! I am seeking opinions on which watch to add to round out a five watch collection.

I currently have:
  • A. Lange & Sohne 1815 Up/Down in White Gold
  • Rolex Milgauss Z-Blue
  • Grand Seiko SBGX091
  • Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute to 1931 Chocolate Dial in Rose Gold

For the fifth watch I am decided between the Rolex Explorer 1 214270 (Basel 2016 edition with longer hands and lumed numerals) and the Omega Speedmaster Professional (either hesalite or sapphire). Keep in mind, I've owned both of these watches in the past and loved both, but sold them at one point or another because they're easy to get back and I needed funds for other purchases.

Which watch do you think would round out the collection the best? I'm picking between these two because I want a black dial with no date (and no, I don't want a Sub 114060).

With that collection, a speedmaster.

Also it is half the price. I’ll sell you mine ;)

Love the Speedy but the EXP 214270 gets my vote.

Speedy because you don’t have a chronograph and you would have watches from five different brands.

I love how diverse your collection is. I say Speedy Pro, heck, I prefer it to any Daytona.

What a beautiful collection you have. Doesn't really need anything. But if you must I would get the speedmaster. It will bring even more variety to your fantastic collection.

I think both watches should be in every collection, but if I had to choose... speedy! I've owned both at one time and you really can't go wrong with either.

I prefer the 214270, pre 2016 because I have one! And because the shorter hands are irrelevant.

I think a speedy fits your collection better, adds to the diversity.

I'd vote for the Explorer I 2016 edition to add something new to your collection. You've already gone down the Speedy route and can add that any time. The Explorer is a classic and the lume is amazing just after you come in from the outdoors. Nothing wrong with the Speedy, a true classic too. Nice collection btw, great variety. Good luck & Cheers!

Don't sacrifice the diversity of your collection by doubling up on Rolex. Speedy hesalite all the way.

Speedy Pro or Explorer I to Complete a Collection?

I love how the Speedy looks in wrist shots and how versatile it is on a multitude of straps. It’s a classic, but I’ve learned the hard (expensive) way that it’s not for me. I have gone through both new (Dark Side of the Moon) and vintage (hesalite and sapphire 3572.50) models with about 10 different straps only to end up flipping all of them. I now have an Explorer 214270 and it may be the killer watch — I often find myself saying that it could be a one and only if I had to choose (thank god I don’t have to ;-)

The moral of the story: You really have to try these two on to know for sure. Don’t make the same mistake I did and buy the wrong watches first...

Good luck!

I love my Explorer and Speedy but with your collection I think the Speedy would be the best fit.

Though others state the speedy is both a classic and would round out your collection , I agree that the explorer is the watch that almost anyone could be happy with as the one and only. I’d give it another look. Diversity works well in the watch box but less so in life. Good luck!!!
