SD43 vs 16710

I have a SD43. I like it, but i am drawn to the 16710 I used to own one but sold it. I now have the chanse of getting another 16710 for the SD43 with around 3000 Euros my way. The GMT is with certificate and in an almost unpolished condition. Looking at SD43 shortage discussions, red letters going away and price increases - would you do it? I would like the gmt more but I dont want to do anything stupid...

Wow that’s a tough one! I personally LOVE the 16710. Especially with a Pepsi insert on. The SD43 is an iconic watch.
It honestly boils down to your likes and desires. Forget about the hype and rumors of a watch getting discontinued or prices going up, go with what you like more even if 90% of people do it differently. You honestly can’t go wrong with either watches!

They are both tremendous watches. As long as the deal is fair, you should go with what your heart says. Given you have posted on here, I suspect you really want the gmt. That being the case, I’d have no hesitation in doing so but bear in mind if you wish to pick the SD up again it will cost you....

Personally I would not do it, SD43 is a much nicer and rarer watch and from your watch list you already have the BLNR. 16710 was never my cup of tea because of smaller double lock crown. Or you just flip the BLNR and get the 16710.

Would be very surprised if Rolex remove the red lettering from the SD43 after only 1 year of production - but, hey what do I know???
The 5 digit GMT's are very nice but times move on, technology moves on.
Personally, I wouldn't trade a modern SD43 for a semi vintage GMT
There must have been a reason why you sold your original GMT?

Unless that condition of the 16710 is 9/10 I would keep the sd43.

Technology moves on...but the mechanical watch fell victim to that 40 years ago. They are an anachronism, and chasing them based on technology is a bit like saying we should all be daily wearing a high tech basketball shoe rather than a nice leather boot.

To me, the difference is condition. I love all the old watches, but I don’t necessarily want something already broken in for me, so, if the 16710 is in good shape, that’s my choice.

I'm in the opposite boat, planning on selling my 16710 after I (eventually) pick up an SD43.

For me the size, the ceramic bezel, and the modernized movement and case/bracelet are the draws

But don't get me wrong, I still love my 16710, but I really just want one sports watch in my lineup

Ive got both and recently ive been wanting to wear the pepsi more and more.
For the the 5 digit gmt is the last of the true tool rolex as i feel the new ones are more and more designed to pamper to fashion.
Dont get me wrong my sd43 is a beautiful machine but i dont believe its going anywhere soon whereas the 16710 will never be made again and the price will only go one way.

Agreed, I bought a 16710 Pepsi to “keep good”.
I now wear it virtually daily. Amazing watch.

contextually speaking I'd do whatever it took to get the 16710. The prices keep rising and really nice examples are getting harder and harder to find.

If you ever wanted one, or will ever want one it's best not to wait.

I picked up an SD43 after a few days of trying to find one. I've had multiple opportunities since then to buy others. At least for now, I don't think it's showing signs that it will be extremely hard to source.

Strange isnt it....when compared to the 6 digits its a bit tinny but there something about it that you cant explain until you get it back on your wrist after wearing a 6 digit.

I love the case size of my 16710, and I have 7 3/4” wrists.

If I do add a Sea Dweller it will be the SD4K.

If u r drawn to the 16710, go for it (if minty and warranty paper)

As someone else pointed out, u can always get the new sd43 for 5-6 years to come
(I don’t think Rolex will stop the red letters after one year, although it would be great for me. Lol).... but the prices for mint 16710 will only be going one way..UP.

It’s hard to say if the deal is good, since we do not know how much u paid for ur SD43.

I would have done it already. The "43" is way too big for my liking - whether the red print goes away or not.

There are an increasing number of threads on TRF where new model acquisitions are regretted and 5 digit models are coveted.
I swapped my BLNR for a 16570 and haven’t regretted it, regardless of value or the perceived ‘improvements’ - Easylink etc.
I just prefer the proportions.
And the trouble is, now I’ve taken against the new lugs/cases/crown guards I can’t unsee them.
As long as I don’t see a five digit next to a six digit I can almost get away with it and want one, but when a photo shows both, the differences are major to me.
