Speedy Pro Moonwatch

Hi all,

I'm really keen on purchasing my first Omega and really like the speedy pro.

Had a look at the Omega website and saw the 2 models;

311.30.42.30.01.005 vs 311.30.42.30.01.006.

The latter is about $1000 more than the former. I understand the 005 has the Hesalite cyrstal while the 006 has the sapphire crystal. Other than that are there any major other differences that I should be aware of and is it worth paying the extra for the sapphire crystal? Thanks!

So called 'Sapphire Sandwich' additionally has transparent case back.

Other than what's mentioned above, that's about it. The Hesalite though is truer to the iconic 'Moonwatch,' if you're into the history and purpose of the piece.

The "sapphire sandwich" version has a sapphire caseback as well as the front and it also has a slightly upgraded movement with better decoration. I personally prefer it, but the hesalite version with the solid caseback is most like the original Moonwatch.

Thanks for the all the replies. Another question;

Any advise on the Speedy Pro 3570.50 which has been discontinued? Any major differences to the current speedy pro? I see a few TS selling its pre-owned and it's cheaper than the current speedy pro retail.

The difference is the presentation box with goodies like a medallion and the loupe...otherwise same watch with different bracelet and perhaps some differences on tritium versus luminova pending on how early of a 3570.50..I think some might even have had the 861 movement instead off the 1861 as well.

The current reference has a bracelet that utilizes screw-caps to secure the pins in the removable links instead of the friction-fit pins that secure the removable links in the bracelet that came with 3570.50. It's possible the newer bracelet feels a bit more robustly constructed than the old one, but if there is a difference then it's not much. Under casual observation the two bracelets have the same appearance, but closer inspection shows that each individual link of the newer bracelet is longer than each individual link of the old one. Indeed, the old bracelet has one more link on each side of the bracelet than the new one does. Because of this, some owners have found it easier to achieve just the right size with the old bracelet when compared with the new one, but I don't think it's a big issue for most people.

There is a thread here for installing an Omega clasp that comes on some other Omega models and has quick-adjust micro-adjustment built in and looks good on the Speedmaster's bracelet. Some members here have made this swap and are very pleased with the results (for ~$200 USD).

I got this for my birthday last year and am using the NATO strap. Love it. Got the Hesalite crystal and got it scratched once but but used the polywatch to remove it.

For what its worth I've just been to an omega AD today amd compared the two.

IMO the acrylic glass creates more character on the dial, being easily legible side on, magnifying the hands better and somehow makes the dial look like a pie pan.

Not worth the extra for sapphire.

Definitely get the hesalite version. It’s more prone to scratches and nicks, but you can easily buff those out with some PolyWatch. The hesalite looks so much “warmer” than the sapphire.

Scratches would drive me crazy.

I too looked at both this weekend and would go sapphire. :)

We're all so different, luckily!

Hesalite all the way. I would never even consider the sapphire.

It does not scratch as easily as people claim. Yeah, if you're really rough with your watches, you might want to stay away, but anyone who isn't clumsy and knocking their wrist around doesn't need to worry. I've had mine for a few months and it's been worn at least 2-3 times a week and there isn't a single mark on it.

Worst case scenario, you get a scratch, a tube of polywatch and 10 minutes will fix it right up.

Hesalite! The original and the hesalite adds so much warmth to the watch. It's beautiful to stare at and the scratches are fixed within seconds with PolyWatch.
