Poll: Preferred Bezel Action. GMT vs. Submariner

Hi folks,

After a quick search I didn’t find a poll measuring this community's bezel preference so I figured I’d create one. Let’s assume these are modern 6 digit references for simplicity of the poll.


Do you prefer the 60 click one-way ratcheting click bezel on the submariner family?

Or

Do you prefer the bi-directional smooth 24 click bezel on the GMT family?


You have to pick one. None of this mom BS of “I like both kids equally.” Please share comments on the high points of either as you see fit or nostalgia about past bezel actions that are no longer produced. I’ll share my preference and thoughts in a subsequent post once this gets going.

Previous GMTs and current YMs have 60-click bi-directional bezels so this one might be difficult to sort out.

I'd have to vote "I like both kinds equally" on the ceramics since I like each for their individual functions. I wouldn't want the soft click of a GMT on a Sub and I wouldn't the hard click of a Sub on the GMT now that I'm used to it.

I prefer the sub, as I can measure elapsed time easier. While this can be done with the GMT bezel, I can much easier glance down and see the increment of time that has elapsed.

The actions of each type of bezel are function-specific and designed for those functions. Ya shouldn't have a bi-directional bezel on a dive watch for safety reasons. If you set a Submariner bezel for 15 minutes and you accidentally move it to a shorter time, no big deal. But if you move it to a longer time it could kill you. Run out of air at 120 feet deep, you're an inclined plane wrapped helically around an axis (screwed).

ras47 has it right. Not a good comparison, the bezels operate differently because they are designed to perform completely different functions.

I prefer the one that matches the function of the numbers on the bezel. A diver shouldn't have a 24-click bezel and a GMT shouldn't have a 60-click bezel. Even if I rarely use the bezels, I'm certainly not going to prefer that the mechanism be for the wrong function.

Unmeasurable so I did not vote. I love my D blue bezel action and also love my 16710 bezel action even more than the six digit models because I can adjust for minutes count exactly, whereas the six digits is for hour increments only. The dive watches are made so they are able to move in only one direction with precise minute count.

They are different and uncomparable. Poll no good.

I like the GMT bezel the best. See how hard was that. I think people are overthinking the OP's pretty simple question. But that's par for the course, i guess

Are we talking aesthetics or functionality? I like the gmt bezel aesthetically but prefer the functionality of the sub bezel. And btw, the sub bezel has 120 clicks.

I use my bezel for timing things mainly, and to me the Submariner / Seadweller bezels work best for that

Thank you for the correction! I don’t currently own a sub and was going back and forth on 60 v 120 when I posted. I guess I should have googled it prior to posting.

Yes, thank you. I mean for everyday use. Let’s face it, many of us aren’t diving on a daily basis or jet setting across various time zones. In your daily use (however that may be) which do you prefer?

I understand the intent of each bezel design, but most of us are wearing these watches to work, dinners, parties, around the house, etc. Most people aren’t using them for their pure functional “tool” design. So, which do you prefer?

I understand this is subjective. That is the kind of the point.

Thank you to everyone who corrected me on the 60 v 120 clicks on the sub bezel. I do not currently own one and couldn’t recall when I posted. I accept the 🔥🔥🔥

Regardless of whether you are a jet setter, pilot or deep sea explorer both bezels still remain useful in everyday life.

The sub bezel is really useful for timing things like cooking.

The GMT bezel is useful when on holiday in a different time zone.

To me, the GMT bezel is more bespoke than the sub bezel. A 120 click unidirectional bezel is pretty much the vanilla bezel for a dive watch, of which there are 000s. The GMT on other hand seems a bit special.

Also with the GMT, when someone with a genuine interest in watches (or gadgets) asks what the watch does, the GMT complication and quick set are quite impressive to explain/demonstrate.

The GMT bezel also has the two tone ceramic... That's just dope.

I prefer the function of the GMT bezel, although I am a certified diver I use the GMT functionality more often. I also like fiddling around with a bi-directional bezel more than a uni-directional bezel.

BUT... I prefer the tactile feeling of the Sub/Sea Dweller bezel when moving it around. So for me it’s a tie.

The OP asked about action, so if that's what he meant, does it matter how a bezel is used? (Timing actions vs timezone issues)
I like the GMT since it CAN rotate in either direction. So, if one doesn't like it's current position, one can move it in either direction to get it to desired location. It's a minor thing, but for me, I've noticed the hassle with my uni-directional bezel watches vs. the bidirectional ones.

The GMT bezel works best for GMT functions.

The Sub bezel works best for Sub functions.

I guess the best of both worlds would be a GMT with sixty clicks so that it could be used as an elapsed time bezel, as well as a time zone bezel.

In reality the GMT bezel still works as an elapsed time bezel, just without precision of the Sub bezel, which of course for most applications is good enough.

So, I'll go with the Sub for the sake for the poll.

There's something oddly satisfying about the action the sub, however I do enjoy the ease of alignment on the GMT.
