Vacheron vs Rolex

I LOVE Rolex watches and am thinking of getting either a new 116681 or 116655. However, I recently came across a Vacheron Overseas blue dial stainless in the price range of the other two watches. Does anyone have any thoughts on the yachtmasters vs the blue dial Vacheron Overseas stainless? I know this is a Rolex forum but was just wondering people's thoughts. Thanks!

Buy what you want. Vacheron is generally more intricate and thus more expensive to fix. Rolex is reliable. Both make amazing timepieces.

poor resale is the first thought that comes to mind for the VC.

I yesterday at buying VC Overseas white face Chrono, beautiful watch David SW, has a beautiful example. But I walked out with DJ41 fluted Blue stick, oyster.
I thought the VC was just a little too heavy for my liking, but very nice.

I did find the used price to be considerably less, over new. Which made me interested, but DJ41, won out

I never buy a watch as an investment, I buy and keep what I like but the resale value tells me a little about the reliability of a brand as well as consumers’ faith in it
Rolex beats most other brands when it comes to resale. That tells me a thing or two!
But........ Buy the watch that you like more!

YMII has never appealed to me

previous gen overseas vs a 116655. The YM wins.

Current gen overseas vs 116655 its much closer to me, but it depends on if you want a RG watch or not. The YM is awesome... bezel, oysterflex strap, and the black on gold color scheme.

TBH i cant imagine resale is particularly strong on any of these three choices... overseas, a TT rolex anything which also happens to be a YMII, and a PM Rolex Yachtmaster. So buy what you like

I also buy the watch I like. But educating yourself on the pertinent facts is a good thing to do as well. It’s called due diligence. Resale value and service cost always something that I factor in.

I own a blue dial Vacheron Chrono and a white ceramic Daytona.

I prefer the Vacheron Chronographs to the Rolex Daytonas - in particular, the Generation 2 VC with the big date. The VC Chrono is a nicer watch in many ways to the 116500, although I love both.

I prefer the YM 1 blue dial to the Vacheron 3-hander, but both are very nice. I would think a big factor might be the ability to quickly change from a bracelet to a rubber strap to a leather strap on the VC...

The Vacheron Overseas blue dial is stunning and the strap change system is really well done.

VC Overseas (particularly, the 2nd generation) are arguably a better value for money at the moment, since they can be had for much less than their original list price. You get a lot of watch for the money with VC, the finish is on a different level compared to a Rolex and the bracelet on the Overseas is miles better comfort and looks-wise than Oyster bracelet. The Oysterflex is better than the VC rubber strap though.

I also find that my Rolexes get a lot more looks by strangers, but my VC Overseas pulls me in to stare at it way more :)

I love the look of the VC but every time I try one on, it’s too similar to other watches out there in looks and never really sings to me.
The YM however almost came home with me but in the end the WG Daytona won out.
That YM is still on my list though. Very comfortable and quite stunning in it’s aesthetics.

I’m sorry to say it, but to me the bezel on the Overseas reminds me of Nazi insignia.

Th overseas (2nd gen) is really nice and kills the YM and DJ in my opinion. The only drawback is lack of true water resistance because of a lack of screw down caseback.

Poor resale is the first thought that comes to mind for the VC.

While this is a negative when buying a watch new from an AD at anywhere near MSRP, this is a huge plus if you're open to buying a used watch. Buying a used Rolex almost seems pointless -- for a little more I can grab a new one (and props to Rolex for achieving that). But a used VC represents great value for a watch from one of the trinity.

Thoughts.
I really can't get the ym2, it's too over the top. Ym1 is really good looking, I prefer the 116622 blue dial personally. The TT is very cool as well, in both dial variets.
The VC is a holy trinity piece and that bracelet is so beautiful.
The VC is HH level and service charges to match. I'd definitely go Rolex myself.

Yes, I agree with the statement and rationale, but when it came to pulling the trigger, I bought a New DJ41.

I agree with this completely. In the secondary market the Vacheron Overseas is one of the few bargains of the luxury watch market. It is incredibly well designed and constructed.

It’s beautiful and heavy, also I as thinking scratch magnet. I like the big double date window, and loved the white dimpled dial. Bought the DJ41 stick.

ascetically, the VC doesn't do much for me.

As someone else said, it does make me thing of WWII Germany when I see it down to the bracelet. I know its silly, but watches are an emotional purchase to me

The VC 2nd, more complex dial, and 3rd gen, blue dial esp, are very nice, but I'd need a very good discount to consider either.

The Overseas is their answer to the Nautilis and the Royal Oak. It was not designed by Gerald Genta. The three major watches design by Gerald Genta are the Royal Oak, the Nautilis and the Ingeneur of IWC. Interestingly, he said that the Nautilis was designed to be a woman’s watch. While all of the themes of Genta watches are derivative, this was derivative by someone trying to copy Gentas style while trying to actively integrate their symbol, the Maltese Cross (thus the look of the bezel, not at all nazi).

VC is considered one of the holy Trinity, but for some collectors, myself included, I really think that should be Lange. Maybe the Trinity should be four brands. They are considered haute horology, which Rolex is not. They make incredible complicated watches but may suffer from what happened to them after the digital watch period of the 1970s where they were purchased by a Middle Eastern investor and kind of went off the deep end.

They do not hold the brand recognition of a Rolex and do not quite have the prestige of PP or AP. There are many watches that fit into this category for one reason or another, in fact, most watches. However, if purchased properly for the right price, they represent a real bargain in extremely high-quality finished and conceived elegant time pieces.

I am not personally moved by the overseas (too much Maltese cross action for me) and thus I’ve never purchased one. However, if I saw one on your wrist I would appreciate you as a connoisseur.

VC is a big step over Rolex in terms of horology, if things like hand-finishing of the movement matters to you.

The watch is less durable and keeps value less than a Rolex.

So, it depends. Try them on and see.

I am sticking to Rolex these days. They are so much more robust with their Ceramic bezels and a PM piece costs less than some “Higher Brands” SS.
