1815 Up/Down or 1815 Chrono

Hi everyone!
This is my first time posting here.
I enjoy reading all your discussions, and hope I’m able to make new friends with you all.

I am on a serious watch purge at the moment, and have decided to acquire a Lange with the money generated.

Here is where I would like to ask for your advice.
I am interested in the 1815 series, especially the Up/Down in WG (234.026) and the 2nd Gen Chronograph (402.026).

My dilemma is going either...

A) 1815 Up/Down + Rolex Steel Ceramic Daytona (116550LN) or

B) 1815 Chronograph

As a result of my consolidation, the watches that I have decided to keep are my Rolex GMT BLNR and my Rolex Submariner Date LV. Either A or B would be added, making it a 3 (or 4) watch collection for the time being.

What would be your pick, and why? Please keep in mind that the 1815 would be my only dressy piece, which I would be wearing to my office on weekdays, and on special occasions like nice dinners and weddings etc.
Also, if anyone has owned both 1815s, I would also like to hear your experience too!

I like both choices but think 1 has the edge as you get so much bang for your buck. I love the white Daytona 116500, not 550, and the 1815 U/D is tremendous value for a lot of dial action. If just one watch then has to be the black 1815 chrono.

If you’re going to wear it daily in the office and special events, you may as well have something with a bit more going on.

That said however, at this sort of expenditure, various doors open beyond regularly mentioned/thought of brands.

Actually, the 1815 AC is another beautiful watch I was looking at!
The moon phase is a beauty, and the calendar functions are very practical.
But somehow, I find the dial a bit busy as well, and maybe that’s why it I narrowed down to the two 1815s.

1815 Chrono for the movement

It would be #1 for me. The up/down will prob be my next acquisition , already have a white DaytonaC. I’ve tried on the up/down a few times and it wears great on my 6.75 inch wrist. Perfect diameter, thin, confortable, love the dial. Waiting to find a good pre-owned or for my next trip to Germany, though, where I can get for ~25% off new w discount/VAT refund. Hard for me to pay full MSRP here in the US.

Less is more to me so I would go with the 1815 chrono.. the movement will make you want to wear the watch upside down! But that’s only if you’re really set on giving up the Daytona, which I love as well... in which case I really do feel the up/down is one of the best dress watches out there in that price range

between your two choices id go with the up/down. I think the 1815 Chrono is superior to the Up/Down but the 2nd generation is my least favourite 1815 chrono- id opt for the first generation if it were my choice.

PJ S' recommendation of the 1815 annual calendar is a good one, and one I would have made myself if you're really stuck on the Rolex Daytona but want a Lange dress watch with much more interesting complications than a power reserve, but if you think it's too busy, you think it's too busy. Personally, calendar moonphases are among my favorite watches and Lange did a great job with this one, although I wish they'd incorporated a power reserve in the 3 o'clock subdial for both aesthetics and practicality, as the "Annual Calendar" text is not to my liking.

From the front, the two 1815s you're looking at look pretty similar. From the back, however, there's a world of difference. While I really like the white dial ceramic Daytona, once you look at the back of a Lange chronograph, the Daytona becomes irrelevant, especially with your two current Rolexes. My advice would be to go for the 1815 Chronograph, which I think is the best value in Lange's lineup, and add the Daytona at a later date, perhaps at list price, which is the only way I'd buy one.

The updown looks like a chrono so you are double dipping on that look

You are looking for a dress or more formal watch AND you already have a chronograph; given that I’d opt for the 1815 Up/Down.

Keep the remaining funds for something else down the road.

Curveball: have you considered a classic Lange 1, in yellow gold. You could pick one up used for less than the 1815 U/D I’d say.

My mistake, I meant the 116500.
This might sound crazy, but I like idea of having the choice of two watches from a versatility standpoint, but I also really am drawn to "having one watch instead of two" from a simplicity standpoint.

You already have a DaytonaC in white!! Wow, congrats to you.
So, brilliant minds think alike, right?
I'm going pre-owned when I choose one from the two 1815s, and am currently on the hunt for a good deal in Japan.
Getting it in Germany sounds like such a great deal!!

I've tried the 1815 Chrono many times, and it's simply a thing of beauty. I always find myself looking at the movement for long periods of time, although I'm standing in front of the sales clerk at the store...
As you mention, the Daytona is really solid, which makes this a really tough decision. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

For some reason, I prefer the 2nd generation out of the 3, mainly due to its simple dial. Why do you not like the 2nd gen?

Actually, I have never tried the 1815 AC, although I have tried the Saxonia AC.
Also, I have tried the U/D and Chrono numerous times!

I will go visit a boutique and try on the 1815 AC before making any decisions. Although I feel that the dial may be busy (and the size is slightly bigger than I prefer), maybe trying it on in the flesh might change my feelings about the watch. I really love Lange's Moonphase execution, so this would definitely be a plus!

Like you mentioned, the backs of the two 1815s are completely different, and although both are great, the Chronograph is just mesmerizing...

Although, I have spent a LOONG time debating 1815 series or Lange 1 series, and have come to the conclusion that something about the 1815 does it for me. I love the Lange 1 (especially the mp), and there is still a small part of me that wants me to consider the Lange 1 again, but that would put me back in square one (which is not necessary a bad thing, but time consuming).

The Saxonia AC is only 1mm smaller, so I doubt the 1815 would look too big.
Of the two, I think I prefer the Saxonia — probably because I am a sucker for big dates, whether done the more commonly seen format or the way Moser & Cie impliments.

Spanner in the works time, part 2... If you like a chronograph function/appearance, then instead of the Daytona (and all the associated hassle in procuring one!) I’d suggest the likes of the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Metrographe.

No pulsometer! id love to have some form of measuring scale for the chronograph.

I vote for the 1815 Chrono. I bought the boutique edition recently and love it. I do not need another dressy watch and my 116520 Daytona gets no wrist time anymore. I think the Sub, GMT, and an 1815 Chrono would cover almost all situations, and would make a superb 3-watch collection. The 1815 up/down is a nice watch, but IMO, the 1815 Chrono is on a different level because of the movement.
