Rolex 6303/645 information
Hi everyone,
I was recently in a small Indonesian village and found a watchmaker who was keen to sell some projects. In his small little kiosk right by a rice field as a Rolex Jean Claude Killy dato-compax in parts (dial quite worn) but otherwise complete. He wasn't willing to sell it as it belonged to a rich customer from Jakarta. He sold me a 6303 oyster perpetual with a black dial with a 645 movement. It was ticking however dirty. The movement as it turns out was complete but with a rooted barrel cover, I have ordered a 600 barrel cover which hopefully fits. Couldnt stake the cover closed. I am wondering which year rolex started printing SUPERLATIVE on their dials? It appears to be a 1954 or so watch, however to my knowledge should only say CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED. It appears re-dialed as the finish is very good and fresh. There is also no lume pips on the dial despite it saying T SWISS. Should I get it restored back to saying 3 words without SUPERLATIVE??? I paid about $550 USD for the watch so it wasn't a huge investment, however keen to get it working well. I noticed the back cover is a 6505 as well which is odd. It is a bubbleback cover and it fits well, is it a Franken? Or could Rolex Indo/singapore/wherever have done something funny back then? If anyone knows what style cover the 6303 should have please let me know. I have fitted a Tropic 12 crystal and kept the original in a sleeve tucked away. Cheers Alexei |
