Patek World Time

I have always wanted to get a World Time in the Patek Philippe mold. A cloisonné World Time is definitely out of the picture being an application piece.

I am almost sure of getting a 5230 but would like to hear your thoughts on the previous models - 5130 and the 5110. I am inclined to go for the WG version why my AD happens to have. All the while I always want to try an RG but decided to take the WG route.

Any inputs are much appreciated.

Three or four 5230G and one 5230J seen in Lugano, Switzerland 2 weekends ago. Sitting on the windows and available for sale without any restriction.

Doesn’t seem popular in that part of the world.

I don't think the 5131 is an application piece. It is hard to get but not application piece AFAIK

It is an application piece in the UK but I have heard in certain countries it is not an application piece.

5110 has always been special in my heart. Easy to read, clear dial, a sense of purpose without unnecessary hard-to-read font and bits spewn about like a peacock. FYI they were going for $12.5k when new. Get the matching wall clock as i did, makes a nice couple.

Depends very much on your wrist size. 5110 for small wrist and 5130 for bigger wrist. I don’t like case shape of 5230. One of my ADs still has a 5130J for sale. PM me if you’re interested. I personally prefer G or P.

Thanks guys! I have a small wrist that can only go for 40mm (and perhaps 42mm Max).

I understand that the 5230 is not as sought after as the 5110 or even the 5131 reference but I’m ok with it.

I’ll ponder on your suggestions. Many thanks!

Patek has not produced a 5230J, you may have mistaken it for a 5230R. Every AD I know in the UK has either a 5230G or 5230R in stock.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I am fascinated by the complication with five cities I’ve been to: Los Angeles, New York, Sydney, Hong Kong, Tokyo.

The 5110G is a fantastic looking piece that elicits the romance of travel, which is great for distracting one from the realities of actual travel.

Quick question - do you know if the 5110Gs are Ruthenium-plated or white gold all the way through? Could of course also have changed during the production run of the ref...

Thanks

Niiice! She looks lovely in G. Perhaps the only Patek i'd consider getting. Clean, useful complication, nicely balanced all around in style.

Patek WT watches are fairly under-represented here, except for the cloisonne dial ones. RG vs WG is personal preference. I own 2 RG, 1 WG and 1 Platinum Patek WT's and each are special in their own way. I would recommend going into an AD and trying on a few before deciding.

Discontinued 5110/5130s may be a little harder to find to try on. However if you contact some of the major pre-owned Patek retailers, they may be able to obtain them for you.

Because the world time is wrong for half the world 50% of the year and Patek didn't incorporate Daylight savings time into the dial.

I dont think people always buy a complication for its functional use....think of a chrono? The new weekly calendar and even a simple date is wrong whenever a month doesnt have 31 days

That's true, but a watch that's wrong half the year is taking the lack of functionality to an extreme.

i agree that it renders the complication less functional and more decorative for a significant part of the year.

If they ever do away with DST completely though, I'd be first in line for a Patek 5110

^^even if it was accurate....its generally difficult to read so actually pretty useless anyway....its just what PP is really known for and very pretty....I dont believe a Vacheron which does account for more time zones and DS is more popular in their collection....people just wanna buy a nautilus

DST offset hour indicators on the dial and a service commitment by Patek to offer city ring replacement (hell I'd even pay for it) whenever a country changes its Timezone and the city would now be an hour ahead etc would be enough reason for me to buy another world timer. I had a 5110J for three months and loved it but couldn't live with the time on it being wrong.

Even with DST offsets on the dial there is no way to account for the different dates that DST is applied around the globe and of course DST isn't even applied uniformly within all countries - Australia for example.

all AD's in the bay area always have a 5230G or R sitting on display.

Yep, for sure! I only cared about a subset of the places on the city ring. Add the point you raised to the list of things to consider or possible dealbreakers
