Waitlists and AD antics, grays and flippers....

Just identifying a simple conclusion...

As a consumer the many issues of supply/demand and warranty card release etc. are beyond my control.

When/if Rolex decides to address these issues, then perhaps I will again be a customer.

Until then, it is not my problem and I am no longer their customer.

Lots of these threads coming on today.

Nobody is forcing anybody to be a Rolex customer. Lots of new money is coming into the game and clearly washing out the old way of doing business.

Inb4 my post count is referenced for being a peasant and lack of knowledge..
Just my opinion.

Totally agree with you here. This Rolex commodity trading has gotten out of hand.

I’ll be a customer as long as I can continue to buy from my AD and there are references I’d like to add.

As time goes by and the wait increases, I have to admit I'm loosing interest in the whole thing. These extraordinary times give a person a chance to develop and pursue other interests. I'm still on some wait lists and will let it ride. It seems that Rolex could do more to provide a fair playing field as they exercise strong control over ADs. Empty displays can't be good for business in the long run. Watches do seem more of a comodity then source of enjoyment these days. My 2 cents. Cheers!

I definitely do not see a solution from Rolex HQ in the near future, so it is either sit tight or look at other brands. The greys will not lower their prices unless a serious influx of goods flood the market.... do you think that will happen??

For lovers of PM Rolex it's still possible to buy at MSRP from AD or even at discount from Grey dealers.

They won't make systemic changes to price and supply so the market won't change, until something changes all markets, but doesn't look like any black swans are on the horizon.

I feel all you guys, seems fool hearty to go on some waitlist when the play field is skewed. What’s the point to play the game when the outcome is already decided against you. I will say that if your persistent enough, you will get what you want. I don’t think it’s impossible but you do need to invest the time and effort. This is not always practical for those in the regular job arena. My nickel.

This fad will pass. Maybe in a year, maybe on 20, or 50 or....

It doesn't matter. They're only trinkets.

Nothing will change until the "world" finds a new thing to focus on. Remember the "Pet Rock" the Rolex market has been like that for 2 years now. Doubtful it lasts. At some point people will move on to the next big thing. Unfortunately based on these responses many WIS are moving on too.

I feel similar, I have not spent as much time here or with the hobby. Have not bought or sold in 1.5 years. That is the longest by far in like 30 years. I am just waiting it out. If nothing changes I still have several Rolex to enjoy.

Is there a particular reference you would like to buy from an AD?

Personally I don't find the current lineup particularly appealing, apart from the DD, DJ, YM, and Daytona, of which only the latter is hard to get. Since the Daytona has always been difficult to acquire, nothing has really changed as far as I'm concerned. I have many older references to enjoy and trade with other TRF members.

My main concern is that Rolex is messing up with the subs and other sports models. Availability remains secondary.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: This isn’t the first time I’ve been unable to obtain a Rolex (spent most of my life unable, actually.) It doesn’t really bother me. Now that I am able, I’ll do without before I’m their puppet on a string.

Well they may not miss Gus per se, but if they alienate their core supporters (WIS-types) as well as new and younger customers (near impossible waitlists for sport models), it may come back to bite them in the ass a bit. I’m not suggesting they’ll go bankrupt or anything but if the general public thinks Rolexes are great but impossible to get, they are no longer aspirational or achievement pieces. They’ll celebrate their achievements in other ways.

I think Rolex won't ever lose their place in their market. For most (non TRF) people, wearing a Rolex is a reflection of your status.

I do however, think that the masses will move on to the next best thing and the supply and demand dynamic will become a little more balanced. Global economy might play a role in this as well.

Good on you for cutting the cord. I think people forget that you don’t drop dead from not getting in on hot trends. Just get back into it when the market rectifies itself.

Thankful for what I already have to tide me over for now, and have been testing new waters. Recently purchased a modern Tudor and am genuinely intrigued. Rolex is still the parent company though so if you don’t intend to give them your business at all it might not work out.

Many hardcore watch collectors used to snob Rolex and now it seems to be the other way around.
