First and likely only Rolex

51st birthday approaches. For first and likely only Rolex, I'm currently seriously considering a silver or blue dial Datejust 41 on jubilee with smooth bezel vs Explorer 1. Both near same cost via gray. Currently own a 2006 planet ocean, so don't really need a dive watch and can't be reasonably sourced anyway. Will be worn daily for work as a physician in office and probably church. Appreciate thoughts, thank you!

The DJ 41 no doubt. You’ll get far more mileage out of its versatility. And it’s stunning with smooth on Jubilee. The perfect balance.

I love DJ41s but I’d go Explorer. More discreet, even more timeless, plenty versatile.

All are nice. I prefer the Explorer I as it is on all on all brushed bracelet and a folding clasp (not present on the Datejust)

Get the watch that you know will put a smile on your face every time you wear it, look to tell the time. Either watch will work fine in the environment you describe and beyond.

My choice of your options would be the DJ. Good luck!

If you will be wearing the watch mainly for the office and church, the DJ is the pretty obvious choice, but the Explorer dresses up well, too.

Your only one? Then don't stick around this place!

The Explorer is a nice watch. But you already own one black dial watch. And just look at that DJ! I would definitely go DJ. If you want it more understated then get the oyster bracelet. And then brush the bracelet if the PCLs are too blingy. Either way, I would def choose that blue beauty over the Explorer.

Hi Jpsmoove,

I’m 53, live in NC but bought my DJ41 in SC, and here is a video of it for you. The watch is phenomenal ... I love it!

Great idea! But, do yourself a favour and give the fluted/Jubilee a try before you decide.

The "Classic" Rolex Datejust has always been fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet. Nothing wrong with the smooth bez, it looks great too. But, scratches are more noticeable which is something to consider.

Whatever you decide, please post some pix.

Do you need the date function? Having both blue DJ41 smooth Jubilee and Explorer I, personally the DJ41 is more dress watch like comparing to the Expolorer I. However they both can dress up & down. DJ41 is 70hr PR where Exp I is 48

Both are phenomenal watches for very similar reasons....the glaring difference obviously being the date. I would use that as the deciding factor - do you need a date window or not?

Yes - get the datejust
No - go for the explorer

Unless you love and value the Explorer’s “story”, in your case, I’d go DJ no doubt.

DJ41 pops with the jubilee. It is similar to my BLNR, but slimmer profile with same movement as the one in my SD43.

I am of the camp that a datejust needs to be in these configurations:

- Smooth and oyster
- Fluted and jubilee

My preference is fluted and jubilee.

Go and try them on. First rolex is always a special one! You need to make sure you love it

Just curious— why wouldn’t you go via AD? They can get either for you (May take a few weeks)

DJ all the way, here is my DJ41 with a rhodium dial, such an awesome watch, highly recommended

Happy up coming birthday.

A fine choice there with the DJ, design icon and also available to buy. Blue dial version really pops.

Either one will help make your birthday very happy! I was never an Explorer fan after turning one down for an Air King but I love the DJ41 and picked up a new one a year ago. Happy Choosing and Happy Birthday !!..show some incoming pics whenever.

How can you say no to this beauty.

Or the rhodium dial coming in close second. I think it's definitely better than an explorer.

I’ve had both DJ41 and explorer 39mm. Explorer wears smaller. Both great watches. I sold my DJ because the explorer got all of it's wrist time. You can’t go wrong either way.

Both of those are very nice and you can’t go wrong with either, but for that size and style of Rolex I’d probably choose the OP39 White.

DJ41 blue jubilee. I would consider the fluted bezel.

Go with the Datejust! It's definitely more versatile than the Explorer 1 (although the Explorer 1 is still pretty versatile). It's classic, understated, and refined. Also I think over the course of the rest of your life you will find the date function very useful, at least I know I do. Also the smooth bezel jubilee bracelet is the best combo, you get the trademark of the jubilee but the smooth bezel keeps it casual enough to wear with shorts and an old tee shirt. My Datejust is jubilee/smooth so I am biased, but there's no doubt it could be a mans only watch and he would be very lucky
