Advice for a new Rolex Owner

So - after looking for months, I bought my first Rolex - a Sub No Date. I’d been searching for this or an Exp 1 for months now. Struck up a very nice relationship with an AD ( after some prior bad experiences ) and had a nice time buying it. I popped it on my wrist and that was it.

Advice for a new owner? How not to feel self-conscious or indulgent? Mistakes not to make in the first few days?

Thoughts for an over-thinker?

congratulations. I think most first time owners will go through similar emotions. It’s a big purchase and most definitely an indulgence

Wear it
Enjoy it
Don’t worry about scratches, nicks and dings - anything can be fixed
Don’t worry about value, you made a great decision
Live life

the Best advice I can give, don’t buy another one, at least not for a few weeks - This game is a disease

Get it insured! My Sub No Date is under $100 annually from State Farm and is insured for full value.

I wear it everyday with no worries. Congrats on your purchase and enjoy it!

Don't over-think it...

Seriously, I'm sure you've worked hard in order to treat yourself to such an amazing watch. IMO it's one the best professional models Rolex offers. I'm wearing mine as I type this.

Enjoy the watch and the memories you make with it. Small scratches are imminent so don't worry about those. Just enjoy the watch as intended and be proud that you're able to enjoy such a luxury

No one ever even notices what watch I’m wearing pretty much ever. Don’t sweat it, just enjoy it.

Congrats on the pick up!

Try not to hit it on anything. Try not to worry too much about hitting it on anything. Don't flaunt it, but don't change the way you normally use your watch to hide it, either.

And enjoy it. :)

You have a fine first Rolex!

Self-conscious and indulgent? Two different states of mind imho.

The first won't necessarily be Rolex contingent and is more a generalized approach to life.

Feeling indulgent could arise if having such an expensive object is new to you and might be particularly felt when directly confronted with instances of poverty and those less fortunate. There is not a straightforward
way to cope with this feeling. I have struggled with this in the past and have many personal ways of rationalizing being comfortable with having more than most. It is a personal matter at its core and you will have to search for your own answers as suggesting to another specifics is ultimately both subjective and judgemental. Perhaps buying your Rolex will spur both a personal and societal inquiry and discovery. Enjoy!

Advice for new owner.

1. Wear it like you would any other watch.

2. If it gets scratches accept it. It happens.

3. Don't mess with it in unnecessary ways. It is an automatic watch and if you have a reasonable level of activity it will keep working with no need of any manipulation of the crown such as winding.

4. There is no need to have your watch serviced until it stops running correctly. It is not a car and it does not need regular lube, etc. Can you do harm by not servicing your watch sooner? If you call wearing out parts that will be replaced anyway harm, yes. If you don't call that harm, then no.

5. Very important. Your watch should be serviced by a Rolex service center only.

6. Decide whether or not you want your watch polished when it is serviced, remembering that scratches will start to accumulate as soon as you start using your watch anyway.

I cope with it by contemplating the fact that I drive a crap car.

Don't travel with it or you might get mugged by roving bands of sophisticated watch thieves. Do not wear it in either hot or cold weather; only wear it during pleasant weather. Do NOT under any circumstance wear it in the rain. Do not wear it while walking or running. Do not wear it to bed. Basically do not enjoy it.

Congrats! Best advice is to just wear it and enjoy it. Turns out nobody else even notices what’s on your wrist. I’ve even sat next to other Rolex owners who were completely oblivious to my Explorer II inches away from them.

From my experience, finding an actual watch enthusiast in the wild is pretty rare. Your watch is for your own personal enjoyment.

Oddly, I had the immediate sense when I put on the Sub No Date that it was much lower profile than I was expecting and fit wonderfully on my roughly 7” wrist. I think that’s why I was so taken by it! My Seiko turtle is screaming for attention, by contrast.

Great point. The fact is that nobody notices a Submariner. The date version screams Rolex on the other hand.

With a captive audience definitely take it off your wrist.
Casual short meets wear long sleeve & just allow the crown to peek out from under.
Airport/Supermarket make sure it is in full view for everyone to see. Pretend you've just become left handed !
Hospitals ABSOLUTLY, go down as many hallways as possible, nurses can hear a Rolex tick from 50 ft.

First Congrats! Second, yes, indulge as it’s a ROLEX. Third: yes, you will be conscious the first few weeks after which you won’t bother. I was conscious but got over it.. Enjoy and have fun..
