Random AD Notes

I visited the AD yesterday and talked to a SA I know. Here are few things he said:

-He feels like his job is mostly explaining to customers why he can't get them the watch they want.
-His customers that spend $150,000 can't get a SS Daytona and many are ticked.
-Customers that spend $500,000 to $1,000,000 can't even get SS Daytonas when they want them. The store gets 2 per year.
-There is a SS Daytona waiting list of 300 people. And they don't go by the list. They sell the watches to the biggest spenders.
-He is selling more PM than ever and the situation from his perspective is good, but he knows its frustrating for customers.
-Their Rolex Rep told them that Rolex is doing nothing to increase production capacity as they are happy with the numbers produced.
-There is a rumor they will be getting more SS watches as China gets less.
-He showed me a pre-owned BLNR on Oyster. Price tag said $15,000.
-The only other larger SS models he had was a white dial DJ41 and a blue diamond dial DJ41.

If I have spent 500k to a million dollars on them, then the gray premium on Daytona is a drop in a bucket. I would go gray. This part does not make sense

I would bet my house Rolex management knows the situation and is happy with their current profit and strategy. Brand image stronger than ever, demand stronger than ever, increased sales of more expensive pieces (PM)... no reason for them to change a thing currently.

Didn’t he mention remorse at getting such a bloated commission on the used BLNR.

My AD is tightlipped about any specifics related to SS models. When you think about it, Rolex doesn't really need them all that much, so while they may be able to tell you what they are seeing, most of them won't be able to speculate with any accuracy.

Agreed.

There is no predicting taste and bias, but if I was able to slam down 1M on jewellery/watches I doubt I'd be looking for a SS Daytona.

You are right, but the thing to perhaps consider is that no one with that kind if cash just to get a SS Daytona. I would understand the frustration if they cannot get one after spending at those levels. But to drop $500 with the goal of a SS piece? That’s not the mindset. I doubt they are buying a half mill worth of things they don’t want

I’ve heard this from ADs and I don’t believe it. If this AD only gets 2 Daytonas a year then it is a very small AD. So this AD has that many people spending > $500k and still can’t get a Daytona?

I think it is a sales tactic to get you to spend more in order to be considered for a Daytona.

Sounds like Rolex is following the PP business model pretty closely.

If I were a sales associate with a client spending $500k to a million dollars on high margin jewelry, and they wanted a SS Daytona...

I'd buy it from a trusted seller here at market price, sell it to my client at MSRP, and eat the premium myself.

If this AD gets 2 Daytonas per year then they're about to lose their license to deal Rolex's (not even the lowest tier shop gets this) - It's either a lie they get 2 a year or it's bye-bye. Best to find a brand that will supply on request, i.e. Hublot.

2 SS Daytona a year sounds unreasonable even for a small AD.

If I had a million dollars to spend at an AD, I do not think a SS Daytona would be my most wanted piece!

But why would a person spending 500k+ on jewelry be buying from such a small shop? Also why would they not just go to a grey seller? Clearly this speculative individual(s) would have significant disposable income. They could bundle a few purchases and get the watch or watches they want for less than the asking price.

I don't want to make assumptions but your AD might be exaggerating a few things including the number of SS Daytonas. My AD tells me they get over 30 a year and I was offered one. I declined as the Daytona is not to my taste and I have no intention of flipping. While I understand smaller shops have smaller allocation, 2 seems a bit low especially since Rolex has been purging so many ADs over the last two years

Nice to read this. No sense taking a watch you don’t want just because it was offered. I declined a blue face steel SkyDweller for the same reason.

True. With 10000000 dollar I would open my own Rolex Boutique.
Madness unleashed. Thanks God I have a Rolex Boutique around the corner that gives me anything I wish for without asking to spend a penny on anything else I don’t want.

If I didn’t already own my submariner, bought when stocks were plentiful a few years ago, I wouldn’t even contemplate buying one if I had to jump through these hoops. I’d simply turn my back on Rolex and buy something else.

Anytime “my dealer says” they get two Daytonas a year, I dismiss anything else they have to say thereafter.
