Make this trade for my first Patek?

Hi Everyone,

First post on the PP section.

Since getting into watches my goal was always to wear what made me happy and not what others perceived to be “the best”.

I have bought and sold 10 Rolex’s in the past 7 years. I look back on many of those watches and consider selling them missed opportunities as all were purchased pretty much at MSRP even though I made a slight profit each time. The only Rolex I can see myself buying in the future is the Submariner (original, no date).

I am currently left with 2 watches- a Hulk and a current model AP ROC black dial. I find myself wearing both less and less.

Like many, I have always wanted a Patek Philippe. The problem was, I could never make up my mind which would make the most sense for me and didn’t want to just purchase something as it would be a big decision without being sure.

Prior to stay at home orders, I had the opportunity to visit with a friend of mine who is a grey dealer - I know I know “4 letter word” - and he had many PP’s which I was able to try on.

-The 5711 (which I always loved from afar) seemed to small for my wrist.

-The 5712 which is BEAUTIFUL just didn’t sing to me for me. (I get easily thrown off with a “busy dial” - and although it’s not too busy, it’s a tad too much for me)

-The 5167 was the opposite end of a dial and seemed too small and plain for my taste.

-Then I tried on the 5164 and fell in love.

The band was comfortable. Flies under the radar for those in my office who don’t know what it is. The travel time function is the best I have seen and I would use it as I travel a lot and speak with many in different time zones daily. The date display gives it the touch of sophistication that I love without being too busy. The dial danced in the light. All checked off the boxes I needed.

I was then offered a trade for my AP and Hulk + $10k for a slightly used 5164 and I thought this was good deal.

Then it hit me.

Could this be my “one & only” watch?
Would I miss a steel bracelet?
Does it “go with everything”?

Maybe it’s pre watch-buying jitters or maybe they are valid concerns. I don’t know.

So I turn to you guys for help and insight - do I make the trade?

How about you stick to paragraph 1 and keep doing what makes you happy instead of doing “what others perceive to be best.”

It would be nice to have that 114060 whenever you need a watch for the rough and tumble stuff you find yourself getting into.

That said the 5164 is a beauty and easily a one and only

You should do it! Sounds like it would revive your interest in wearing your watches, and just one watch for everything makes it easy.
You can always add a no-date sub down the road when you feel like adding something.

5164A can be used for all occasions. Only issue is service time. Might suggest picking up a SS Rolex as a 2nd piece for when the Patek is gone of the better part of 6 months for service.

Money wise, you’re not getting a deal but it’s fair based on the current market. Agreed with the others you should pick up a sub as well. Would make a great pair.

Watch on a rubber bracelet as an “only watch” - I know it wouldn’t work for me.

There has to be a n+1

I sold my 3 collection of Rolex for one Patek years ago. Love the watch and love having one watch to wear. I say do it.

Personally, I would unload the hulk and ROC as I'm not a fan of the hulk (not as versatile as a sub ND) and dont like the ROC...unless its the new 38mm panda with blue subdials.
I've had an aqua and it can be a one and only however I'd add a ND for beating around

I believe that two is one and one is none. Nothing wrong with the trade or ownership of the PP, a fine watch. I would need a second watch in the rotation as the PP is not a watch for all events and times.

I love my 5164 and it could easily be a one and only. However, I wouldn't do it. Not only is that not a great monetary exchange but you are completely losing any diversity in your collection. Pass, save up and buy it when you are ready to add.

I'd say go and do the trade. With your past history of buying and selling watches for a different one, you will likely move on to something else in a few months to a year. But enjoy it while you can. I don't think it will not likely be your "one and only" watch. There are many better options out there for that.

I'd keep the LVc and get the 64.
