Tried on an LV - clueless SA & low ball absurdity all in one go.

So was out with wife today for lunch, we passed a local big name GreyD so I had to have a look through the glass..
..well, jaw on floor.. It's been a long long time since I have beheld such beauty.

Sitting under the lights was a pre-owned 116610LV. If you own one yourself or have seen one in a window under lights you will understand.. if not, then you will if you ever see one properly.

Even though it was £14,500 I had to go in and at least try it on, (even though I would never buy it, I can get this for much less elsewhere, this is just for my own interest).

We go in and I ask the pleasant SA if I may look over the 'Green Submariner'. We take a seat and it arrives on a leather pad as I remove my own 116610LN.
As I ask if I may try on (covid aware) she says no problem and asked me if I wish to trade my own piece. Now this is a keeper but I allow them to appraise it regardless, it's 2018, nobody knows better what that's worth than me (and many of you too of course).

She returns: 'We would need to send this way to be appraised and it would take around 5 days'. (?).. can you not just give me a figure off the top of your head, I ask. .. goes away and comes back again minutes later and asks 'where did you get this?'
Gleneagles, 2018. That's strange she exclaims, because the serial number is coming back as from 1989.

After I explained that serials have been random for a decade or more, the figure she came back with was between 5 and £6000.

So.. after calling the LV a Hulk, not being able to tell my watch was real from the get go while examining it, wanting to send it away for a week or more to come back with a bonkers lowball and wanting Brewster's for the LV. Needless to say, not very impressed.

However.. I have a new problem- I NEED a 116610LV and will not stop thinking about it until it happens! Trouble is, I can't pay the grey price and keep my LN and not get divorced.. I need to buy at retail to be able to keep my LN. If anyone can help source an LV in Scotland, please drop me a line..

Didn't that Gleneagles shop/boutique get robbed that year? I was up there the same year playing golf and thought the hotel was amazing and didn't expect the Rolex window

I was expecting you to say you buckled and bought it when I saw the pic mate haha but chances of someone giving you a heads up on a retail hulk are about the same as winning the lottery i'd say!

Weirdly, I was offered a BLNR from Gleneagles WOS back in 2016 which I had to turn down at the time!

You’ll really struggle to get an LV from an AD (plus discontinuation rumours etc). Either way it’s one of the hardest watches to find at RRP. However I’d say Gleneagles is your best chance by far in Scotland.

Your grey dealer visit sounded shambolic (I’ve had many similar). Was it one of Chisholm Hunter’s branches by any chance? (They have several Sunday names too!)

I was in an Omega Boutique in London a few years ago and took a look at a POC and a PloProf.

The bezel on the PloProf had the 3 or 4 hour marker at the 12 o’clock position. It didn’t easily turn and I didn’t want to force it so asked the SA how it turned. She tried it too and then told me that the bezel didn’t turn on the PloProf model.

I thought about this for a second and raised a doubt that a professional deep sea dive watch would have a non-turning bezel especially one apparently randomly aligned. I asked to have another look and then worked out that you press the button at the top to unlock the bezel.

This got me thinking though, you can’t expect every SA in the World to be a WIS or even have an interest in watches. Some are just there to sell stuff for a living!

What is more laughable is the possibility that the SA used this routine because it works on some people. Eek! I wonder how much they paid for that LV in the window?

Afraid I can't help on the AD front. My AD's list is closed and they believe that not everyone on it will ever get one. I paid £8K for mine. At the time I thought it was a bit steep (but justified for me). I never thought for a second that prices would hike to present levels. It's ludicrous. Sooner or later, something will knock the bottom out of this situation, and the LV will still be a brilliant watch.

If I had disposable income of around £12000 I could probably get one on some websites... which to me is 'much less'. That's still beyond my poverty levels sadly.

Back when I was a young scamp, when you fancied a another watch it was only £3-5000 for an SS or TT of any flavour. Today it's a joke.. retail prices are fine.. grey..

My point was, this GreyD is very expensive and around £2500 more than anywhere else... but still beyond my means. In $ that's about $3200 more than the next grey..
