Will you clarify what you mean by "investment"? If you're speculating on future value, then my sense is the watch shown in your photo (reference 2531.80) would be a safe purchase because its market value is likely to at least hold steady in the future.

My advice: make smart purchases of watches you enjoy wearing.

Exactly. Love the 2531.80. I'd say get it.

If you're hoping to make money off the watch then no it's a terrible investment. You'll do much better investing in the stock market. If you like the watch and plan to sell later at a small loss then yes it's a good purchase.

I've owned the watch since 1998. I bought it in Kobe, Japan for about $1,800 US and Chrono24 says it's about $2,400 now?

So not exactly amazing appreciation. Plus, it needs maintenance every 5 years because it's the 1120 movement with traditional swiss lever. So when you take the cost of servicing into account, you're either breaking even or taking a slight loss.

But it's been my beater for 20 years! That's priceless.
