Issue w/ New Tires and Rim Weights...

I washed my car today and noticed the sticky backing from the old weights on my rims from the previous balancing. I got new tires and they were rebalanced the technician didn't remove the old sticky crap. I just removed the crap from 4-rims!

*TIP* When you get new tires ask them to remove all the sticky crap from the old weights when they are balancing your rims.

While your at it... Have them clean them really good and put some wheel and Rim Sealant or coating that repels brake dust, dirt, and road grime that cause corrosion and damage to wheels and rims!

I haven't had any coating put on my rims yet. I get tons of break dust on them. My understanding if you have the coating on your rims a garden hose with a nozzle can be used to just spray it off! That would be great!

M cars are the worst in brake dust....which sucks even more when you have black rims.

I have the wheels on both our cars coated with ceramic coating. Pressure washer gets most of the brake dust off. Doesn’t do anything for the curb rash it gets when the wife drives.

In some circles, I'm known as the Wheel Weight King! Seriously, I've done extensive research and have collected some 30+ different vintage (pre dating the metric change over) wheel weights from different companies. I've conducted several presentations and have been approached about publishing a book on the subject! All of these weights I've studied are the clip on type, they're not being used as much today, too many were being thrown onto our highways.....lead poisoning into the waterways, etc.....So, they've changed the metal compounds and relocated them to inside the rim, but still not the optimum location, which is actually the outermost or tread area. A method of permanent balancing can be obtained using a tube, wrapped around the rim inside the tire partially filled with fluid. Truck tires sometimes use this method.

Thing is, it's easy being the KING, when there are no others to compete with!

I always wash my own cars at the car wash (I've never even been through an automatic one) so removing wheel crap is a weekly thing.

I agree that they are pretty cavalier when balancing the wheels.

Yes, I am. It really checks a lot of the boxes for me. I still love the body style and it has plenty of power. I've been thinking of getting a new car but having a hard time parting with the M6.

There are a lot of good wheel sealants on the market, and pro-detailers have their favorites or even their own formulations (AMMO NYC, etc). But the only way to eliminate/reduce brake dust is by using surface coated or ceramic brake tech.

Interesting - my wheels were coated too when I did my car and a blast from a hose and the dust is gone. The difference is unreal before the ceramic and post ceramic. Cleaning them has never been easier or quicker as I barely have to do anything now.

Same experience here Ken! Maybe different concentration of SiO2 produce varying results?

I still have to get in there and brush what’s left off but it’s not as bad as just bare paint.

Another variable could be brake pads. I use G-Loc GS1 brake pads with my Brembos. The OEM pads that came with the car were awful and left enough dust to make a sandcastle after an autocross session.

I have Nano bond on mine
