Is it a common mistake by Rolex?
Heya,
For TOG owners, or those have access to an TOG, I have just got a brand new TOG from local AD (Singapore), and I just realised this brand new watch, which supposed to be in perfect condition, do have a blemish on it. There are luminuous "dot" on all the hours marking (at one oclock, two oclock, etc) with the exception on the twelve oclock (the Rolex logo). Now I just realised this luminuous "dot" is missing on the fifth oclock marker - the dot mark is there, but there is no luminuous "dot" on it! I was thinking, whoever (or whatever) crafted this piece must have forgot to put this luminuous "dot" for this spot, as I don't see it anywhere inside the watch (under the stupid assumption that it got loose and it should be inside the casing still). Now how rare is that? I'm thinking on going back to the AD and I don't know, get it fixed or something. Can someone with TOG confirm that theirs do have a luminuous "dot" on the five oclock marker? |

Unfortunately, nobody has the perfect Rolex.
I think buyers should bring a loupe with them when buying a watch. Then when you spot the imperfections, the AD would probably have to notify Rolex USA and improve on quality control issues. |

Yeah but thinking they are one of the well-known watch makers, they should've avoided "mistake" like this.
I'm interested to know - if any - the statistics of people who bought rolex with such ridiculous imperfection. |

The Rolex luminous"dots" don't fall out.. to the best of my knowledge.. They are a paint matrix, wo would have the consistency of an epoxy when applied..
I have seen fakes with the "luminous" dots fall out as they are just punch dots glued in............maybe you need to look more closely at all the other aspects of this particular watch..

I got it from a well-known AD here in Singapore. If it is indeed fake I'm more interested in filing suit and getting huge settlement from them heh heh.
OK then I guess they forgot to "paint" this particular dot. Anyway, let's work on the assumption that this is NOT a fake (I've got all the standard items, box, warranty card with correct serial no, etc), how many people have encountered such Rolex with ridiculous imperfection? |

Anyway I've attached the pics in my first post. Maybe someone care to take a look from visuals and confirm that it is not a fake (just to shake off the skepticism that genuine Rolex watch do have those ridiculous imperfection).
Again anyone else encounter similar thing before? How often this happen? I tried googling but have not found the perfect keyword. |

I don't know, but to me, it looks like the luminescent paint wasn't even applied to the 5:00 marker. If you note all the other markers (except for the noon "Rolex logo" marker) they all have a hefty "dot" there, except for 5:00. I'd take it back to the AD and see what gives ?

I'm gonna to, but would be interesting to find how often this happen for such a big brand. If it is a rarity in itself, this watch might worth more with such mistakes! I might actually wore it and use this as a conversational point when I'm meeting people. =)
"Look, can you imagine how big brand watch maker such as Rolex (who supposedly make one of the best brand watches around) make such a mistake?" |

It does seem like there a few more quality issues as of late. For example, there was another thread that posted the other day in which the crown in the rehaut and the 12 o'clock marker didn't line up on a brand new GMT IIc. It's a great question, and I'm hoping that this doesn't become the norm rather than the exception, especially for such a prestigious brand.
As for valuation, I'm not sure how flaws would influence the price. For me personally, it would drive me bonkers to the extent that I wouldn't care about the valuation as I want my watch to be perfect.

Great to know. So there are other issues too. But it seems like this no luminous marker mistake is really a trivial one, not to mention it's fairly visible even to an untrained eye!
I can understand quality control problem for mass produced items, but i always have the impression that Rolex doesn't really "mass produce" =) Perception I guess. |

Vindy9 - this is definitely not a common problem. You should take the watch back and get a replacement ASAP. I highly doubt the watch would be considered more valuable given this mistake.

Someone from this forum posted a picture of a Sport Rolex with assymetrical indices. So inconsistencies from Rolex is not umcommon.

I happen to have one of the mis-alinged coronets on the rehaut of my GMT IIc. I have worn the watch almost every day since I bought it and doubt that anything would be done about it now. But I do agree that it seems that there are more and more quality control issues in the last year or so.
These posts are becoming increasingly common and for someone who truly appreciates the marquee, they are rather disturbing. |

Agreed!! That's a definite Quality Control cock-up on Rolex's part. Take it back and demand an exchange!!

With a 10x loupe I have found imperfections on all my watches. Not only Rolex... One interesting observation is that I have two late Explorer IIs, and there are minute differencies on the cases. I have written about it earlier, and will try to take photos. Actually I checked cases out at an AD, and found two other Explorers with different cases. (It is the form of the lugs, and I would say we are talking about parts of mm (micrometers)).
Of course only WIS people like us will recognise this... but anyway. The TOG: Bring it back. I usually do not care about a piece of lint stuck in the colour of the text, that I can only see using a 10X loupe, or missing colour on the 24h hand, that I also only see using the 10X. I do not care about a mis-aligned crown on the rehaut, But missing luminova is too much. Best of luck getting it fixed, and congrats on a great watch. The TOG in SS/WG on Jubilee is (in my view) the best iteration of the current DJ! Best, A |

FWIW, Rolex lume stinks anyways....so you are not missing much! In all seriousness, get the dial replaced.

You should take it back and have it changed immediately. I don't think this sort of imperfection adds value to the watch in the way some Daytonas with a "6'' instead of "9'' (or was it the other way around?) on one of the subdials command a higher resale value. Which AD did you buy it from?

And so I did =p, I did bring a loupe with me and amzingly found some scratches on the bazel of my explorer I, near the winding crown, now how weird is that, that a new watch would have scratches on it's bazel?

Since it was an amazingly small and unditectable scratch, I took it, nevertheless, I agree with those who wrote that Rolex need to up level their qualit control...

I would blaze a trail taking the TOG back to the AD. The AD and Rolex should absolutely fall over backwards trying to fix the issue.

Yes demand an exchange. Don't let the AD give you the old story about having to send it to Rolex.
This will take you at least 1 or 2 months. Regards |

The Dial?!?!?! Get the whole f--in watch replaced!!! You bounced big money for that, you shouldn't have to settle for a mistake and risk changing the dial on a brand new piece.

Looking your pictures over, I would have to say ...That is not right..
Any Dealer worth his franchise should immediately take that back, give you another and immediately send it back to Rolex......

This is from The Hour Glass in Singapore.
I contacted them and they told me I can't do a one-to-one exchange! They mentioned since each watch have unique serial (duh, like no one knows about this) - and they have sold this certain serial to me, they can't take it back! They offered to send it back to RSC and have the dial replaced. Should I give in or what? On a side note, I'm still amazed on the rarity that this happened (missing luminova) and it happened to me! |
