Yachtmaster question
This may be an ignorant question to some, but here goes! Besides being a drop dead gorgeous watch, what is the Yachtmaster's purpose? I ask this because I think may want to own one some day. The relatively small water resistance stumps me even further since I thought the ocean would be its specialty. Going out on a limb, I'm guessing it has something to do with yachting...

Not at all. It's sole purpose is to get that girl at the end of the bar to go home with you!

You will also notice that the markings on the YM bezel are identical to those on the SUBs and SD. Difference being, the YM bezels are only available in precious metals - YG or Platinum. JJ

I had one before and sold it since I can't afford a YACHT.
So I ended keeping my Subs because I am always under the water. |

Ah, it has a uni-directional bezel! I was wondering what that distinguishing ingredient was. Very cool....I don't see myself having to time any yacht races, but it never hurts to be prepared I suppose |

The YM has a BI-DIRECTIONAL bezel which turns BOTH ways.....same as all the GMT-IIs. JJ

In all honesty I probably will never time a yacht race either but I use mine to time myself on the treadmill at the gym, or the steak on the BBQ, or my time in the pool, how long the wife will yap about me buying another rolex without her permission etc...

Although the depth of the YM are officially less than the subs, they can handle the same levels as the subs. The difference is that the YMs weren't tested to those levels, so it can't be claim.

The trip lock crown should give it the same water proof rating...Is that what you are saying? Next question if it and the New GMT IIc have the same crown system why has Rolex not tested them to the same depth?

The Triplock is for good symmetry, not to go deep. The depth rating on the Sub, SD and DSSD, which also all share the Triplock, is the thickness of the caseback (and ringlock/crystal for the DSSD) Neither the YM, the GMT, or the Daytona, which all have triplocks, are likely to survive a deep dive without the caseback deflecting enough to contact the movement.

I hate to say it but never have held a submariner so cant speak on its thickness compared to the YM. But from what I have read its also a different material on the caseback. I wonder if you can change the caseback on a YM to that of a Sub? |

Does the bi-directional nature of the YM bezel dictate that it is prohibited from use in scuba diving activities??

I personally love having a bi-directional bezel since it makes timing things easier. |

I don't dive, but I do swim (in the pool and in the ocean) and snorkel with my Yachtmaster without any worries about water getting into the watch. It is a durable, great-looking watch. I also constantly use the bezel for timing stuff (parking meters, cooking, etc.).
Unlike the Submariner, the YM also comes in a ladies' size (29 mm) and mid-size (35 mm), as well as a full size (40 mm). Perhaps a secondary (or tertiary) purpose of the YM is for Rolex to offer a professional/sports watch for women without making a "lady Sub." |

I own a YM and have often wondered how a bi-directional moving bezel is used to time races? After all, shouldn't it also be uni-directional like the Subs or SDs if the objective is to mark off time?

A bi-directional bezel is SUICIDAL to use in any deep-sea professional diving. You must use a UNI-DIRECTIONAL bezel only for obvious reasons.

that's right. safety first.
only the YMII has the real count down function for the yacht races.
