I think i'm done with Rolex
It's been a long time ago when I was barley in my 20's when I purchased my first Rolex from a dive shop in Miami Florida around 1982. A 5513 and had to shell out $292.00 (includes the tax). It was the pinch and pull model, A nick name I had given it as it pinched my arm and pulled my hair. It kept about as good of time as a sun dial as I recall.
Since that time I have owned many other brands including a few more that with the name Rolex. In 2020 I purchased 2. A 116000 and a 126200. I recently have sold them both. I am cannot express what a relief it was to be rid of them. I could go into detail, But suffice to say, I don't care for the AD games, the prices VS. what you get and the inflated cost of a common service or the long wait time. What I see personally in there QC department is no where close to what they advertise. There are company's that produce watches at half the cost, I think are as good or better than Rolex in terms of QC, time keeping and durability. There service includes the same and is also half the cost. I can't include appearance because it's to subjective. No, it's not a money issue, I just don't see the value. I don't want a pretty watch to begin with. Shinny and polished. I need one that is tough, Takes a beating and still appear pretty much as I bought it 10 years from now. Does not spend more time at the repair shop than on my wrist. It's just my opinion, nothing more. For those of you that cherish your Rolex, I am happy for you, Sincerely. I am done with them and buying elsewhere. Not meant to be a rant, just posting a reason for my up coming absence. I will be enjoying the forum in other areas. Thank you all. |

Hope you will find the watch(es) you like and will enjoy them for many years! The one(s) that can take a beating and still look great many years and generations later, like the Sub!

Fair perspective. So many other great brands that make fantastic watches with reasonable price points.

I commend you for your decision and wish you the best finding a watch brand that works. This is not a decision made in anger, or spur of the moment, you have thought it out and will go with another manufacturer. Good luck in your search and post a thread here (WITH PICS) on what you decide to wear and why

Good luck; there are other watches out there that are more affordable for initial investment that will take a licking (and keep on ticking). I find my Ball watches to be a good value and even legible all night long. They won't appreciate like a Rolex so the cost of long term ownership is much better for the Rolex watches.

Thankfully the forum recognized long ago the importance of having many sub forums for other brands.
A watch lover is a watch lover. And a Rolex lover alone isn’t what you want to be these days imop. |

Makes sense and I agree with you to some extend.
However why Rolex is interesting in my opinion is that their watches (mostly) are well designed. This doesn’t apply to all models but in general; The case is slim, the dial simple, there are no competing typefaces on it, no sapphire exhibition back nonsense (do we need to see boring movements? Some brands think so), bracelets clasps are excellent, the bracelet tapers, etc. To me the value is in the details. Take omega new speed master. The clasp is now square, but the pushers (which I don’t like) are oval in form with a white inserts. To me this is design non-sense. Bulgari Octofinissimo has no adjustment and to set the bracelet it’s the hammer and pin, and has no lume, etc. To me this is the same exact issue I have with Apple competition. No other laptop can give me a 16/10 display, they have minuscule and horrendous trackpads and offer a minimum amount of USB-C ports. Yes they have drawbacks, but they offer a design that is both simple and excellent, free of gimmicks. No funny texture here or quirky shape there. I understand people will want other things, but me Rolex (and Apple), are the only brand that design are making sense. They are not perfect but they are devoid of what I dislike. |

Good luck in your journey of finding a watch that suits you better! Do have a look at Sinn. They make truly robust watches for a fair price.

I have enjoyed wearing and collecting watches even as a kid. Love the hobby. I think I have a picture somewhere. I will try and find it.

That's me and my sister back in 1972. That is 3 Heuer dive watches on my arm. They would stop running on my uncles arm and then he would give them to me. So my uncle is to blame for my affection.

I haven't lost my love for Rolex however I have changed my mission over the last year and have been gravitating towards a few real important pieces for me that are out of production as I continue to watch good examples soar in price further. I recently acquired a really nice later 80's 5513 with a beautiful patina on the dial. This is going to be my 4 digit keeper. I also have a very nice 5 digit Pepsi that continues to go up in value. Granted I don't have a pristine Red 1680 or my sadly traded 1665 Great White SD, but the time of finding great examples of these at anything close to a reasonable price is gone and won't be coming back. I've let go of a couple of current and hard to get pieces at quite frankly a fair profit to fund these. So I guess, for me I'm losing interest in the chase of the new impossible to get pieces and regressing to the long hunt for a smaller number of classics that are gone from production forever. Nothing on the new model radar that I feel like I can't live without, but again - that's just today and anyone that has followed me on this forum knows I've done considerable bouncing around over the years. Best of luck! Lots of great brands and watches out there to pursue!

LOL, gotta love those '70s haircuts! We're about the same age, OP, I can relate.
Omega makes some fine watches, regardless of what *some* people here think, and there are plenty of other choices, including some made in 'merica, you know, if you're into that whole made-in-USA thing. Many of them have Swiss-made movements. My last Rolex was a new Sub (114060) and I don't know why - the $9000 price, the size, or what, but it just didn't work for me, and I sold it quite soon after purchase. I am on "the list" for a Pepsi, but only because I know if that if it doesn't sing to me, I can flip it easily. The rest of them - meh.

There are a lot of awesome watches out there and the AD's will be begging you to spend your money with them.. instead of the other way around. Right now, Rolex has the privilege of people begging just to get their foot in the door. It's one of the craziest things I have ever seen. We are spending our money on luxury goods. I think a lot of people have forgotten that.

Maybe, but doubt it. Of course I should never say never. Something new and obtainable with a 33XX might appear in the future.

Yeah I m with u.
Don’t get the point of someone who has been here 3 months and starts a thread saying don’t miss him because he won’t be around due to silly Rolex AD games... than he says it’s not a rant. Only question I have is: what happened to the 5513?

What you say certainly makes sense! Commendable that you care about the quality of the watches.
When the crazy pricing bubble bursts, many others will be gone too, but because they only care about the investment values. |
