After Market Leather Strap! Yes or No?

So, as I dive deeper and deeper into the world of Rolex I find myself wanting more vintage models. I am interested in a datejust 1601 with a leather strap. All of my Rolex's are completely original and I would never buy anything not factory set. However, this would be my first Rolex with a leather strap and I am wondering if it matters if the leather strap is original or not? I don't actually think this model was ever released by Rolex in a leather strap, correct me if I am wrong. Basically, I am trying to figure out if it is a bad move to purchase this model with a non-rolex strap? Thanks!

The original jubilee bracelets that typically accompany 1601s are usually in terrible condition and would require aftermarket restoration work. As long as the price reflects the lack of the jubilee it should be ok. Here is a pic of a 1601 on an aftermarket leather strap and custom endlinks by smartyjones

Okay, wow that was very helpful! Thanks so much. Would you say $3700 is a good price for this watch in an after market leather strap? It seemed like one of the better deals out there and the watch is in pretty good condition.

Thats highly dependent on condition. You may be able to find a better deal

There are genuine Rolex bands available but they ain’t cheap. Think that as long as you buy a good quality leather band and add a genuine buckle you should be able to “pass” the Rolex police here

Take a look at the Panerai and Patek forums. A lot of aftermarket leather straps used. Nothing wrong with this and quite common on older Datejust models.

It is indeed a terrific looking dial. I happen to have an extra one in great condition if any 1601 owners are interested. PM me.

Get a good quality strap and as long as you're happy with it, go for it.

A lot of those vintage DJs, etc look magnificent on a good aftermarket leather strap. Not necessary a dollar +/-, but an upgrade in the looks department IMO.
