Deposit on 5196
I have a shortlist of references I’m considering for my first Patek
5196 Calatrava small seconds 7234 Calatrava Pilot 5227 Calatrava 5212 Weekly calendar An AD I’ve reached out to has said the 5212 would require purchase history Had a call yesterday saying have just got a 5196r in stock, suggesting I put a deposit to reserve it until lockdown eases (UK shops reopen 12 April) What’s your thoughts regarding deposits (assured it’s refundable) for a watch I’ve only seen on the PP site |

FWIW, I have a 5196G that I purchased at AD last year (here in the USA). I left a deposit, because it had to be ordered, and ultimately took some 6 months to arrive. Leaving a deposit was no problem for me, since I had purchased from my AD before and I trust them (and yes, deposits should be refundable).
The bigger issue is: I would *always* encourage you to try on a Patek reference you're interested in before buying it. These things are expensive, you want to make sure it looks and feels the way you hope it will. Some references wear larger/smaller than dimensions would indicate, and some sit on the wrist different than what you would expect. |

5196 is great calatrava and has the DNA of patek (it is direct decent of ref 96), extremly thin, manual wound, no date, symmetrical dial. i believe the case is 37mm which on paper looks small but because the watch is so thin it looks nice.
5227 is automatic, hunter back, with date. it comes in at more modern 39mm which is more modern size. 7234 i believe this is the lady pilot. not sure why you are considering it. the men pilot is the 5524 5212 i believe people are after it for the metal and relative price as compared to AC. if you can increase your budget over the 5212 you would find plenty of ACs to choose from and you won't have to wait or have history

7234 is shortlisted as I thought it was marketed as unisex. Other references could be added once I get to try them in store. I could increase my budget to consider AC’s - suggestions are welcome! Patek is indeed a very slippery slope! |

Absolutely love my 5196 and would recommend to anyone as their first experience with a Patek.

The 5196 is in my opinion the most classic looking Patek in the whole range, I love mine

The obvious choice would be the 5212A for me but since it's a second purchase required piece I would go for the classic 5196.I prefer the G or P model though.
The 7234 is unisex. I would say it was previously labelled wrong by Patek on the R model but now with the G it is appropriately dubbed unisex. On a smaller wrist like mine, it wears better than the 5524. However, due to the rose gold used on the R, I would say the G model is better on the 7234. It wears like a 5196 or even like a 5146 so it isn't small by any means. I think 5227 is a dust collector (within the dust cover) haha. And I wouldn't really open the caseback often enough. Here is a pic for sizing. I'm about a 6.5" flat wrist on a cold day. |

If the 5524 is too large, then the 5212 will not work, either.
The 5212 is a larger size reference.

5196 Is 37mm but it wears larger due to the case finish and the dial which takes up most of the case as the bezel is fairly thin. It's a great piece. Pure Patek DNA. |

OP, I would certainly not put a deposit if I was in your shoes. I am not in the retail funding business and not willing to take on any insolvency risk for just reserving a watch I am not sure I want.
On to the watches... 5196: Best looking watch on your list IMO but small movement and wears larger than one might think 7234: Good looking watch in a great size but I am not into travel time watches personally 5227: Looks good on paper but is quite large for a basic dress watch and the large and empty dial makes it look a little boring 5212: Busy and not attractive in my eyes I'd wait for the new releases this April before pulling the trigger on any of the above. |

i own a 5146G which just got discountinued and absolutly love that watch. If you like apetures rather than sub-dials to display the day and month then 5396 is a good option too. i believe the case shape of the 5146 is better than the 5396. so if you are able to find remaining pieces at your AD then definelty go for it. as soon as PP announced thier discountinuing of the 5146, the last 7 pieces of the 5146 got bought in a day or two

Apart from 5212A other watches are readily available and I don't see the need to pay a deposit to secure a watch. I am happy to direct you to an AD (once the shops open) who has all the watches in stock |

I have exactly the same watch, I was going to put a picture up but yours does it plenty of justice already.
In my humble opinion it is probably the most classic look that most think of when they think of a Patek and genuinely stunning in the flesh - I'm wearing mine right now and I never get tired of looking at it. I feel it wears more like a 40mm Rolex though and certainly looks bigger than 37mm when it's on the wrist. I have a 7.5" wrist and it looks like a 40mm on me. |

Don't know why AD is asking for a deposit. My superb AD never asks for a deposit.
If he can communicate with you enough to tell you that they have a 5196 is in stock, he can invoice you, you can pay for it and he can ship it to you by courier. Superb watch by the way. |

Have you considered the 5396? For me it ticks all the boxes. Anyway the 5196 is a great watch.

While i love the history of the 5196 my choice would be a 5227G. I wear it daily, definitely in a more casual setting. Here is mine with the 6007 strap.

The reality is you have to see these watches and try them on before you can make a choice. They are all very different. After you do you will choose the 5227. The 5212 is an oddball and unavailable, anyway, the 5196 an antique, and the 7234 would be more interesting if it weren't a two timezone watch.

I tried on the 5196 first, then the 5227 and after seeing the 5196 I liked the 5227 less because it looks like there is a massive blank space in the bottom half of the dial. The 5196 small seconds adds balance. |

Thanks for all your replies and the sage advice- take time to try several references
The COVID restrictions are to ease up on 12th march and have no stomach to rush into a purchase and suffer buyers remorse. Felt the AD raising the deposit , was leading me down that path I will visit several AD's so I can view the 5196, 5227 and the AC's Hope to report back with great news of an acqusition :) |
