Blue dials - Is blue dials to be considered classical or timeless rolex dials?

As title suggest, I wonder what you think of blue dials in general, and particularly on rolex watches. Timeless beauties? Or just trendy now?

Blue dials are both timeless and classic. They’re suitable for both dress and sport and Rolex blue is the best blue out there IMHO. The color beckons me and echoes an azure sky. Nothing against classic black dials but I wear my Datejust 36 way more than my Sea-Dweller.

I think we can quite confidently give the title of best blue dial to F.P journe.

I’m not a personal fan of blue I have a large collection with no blue in it. I would love to add 116618Lb very soon though.

My first blue dial Rolex was the Z-Blue. The orange lightening bolt second hand, the green sapphire and the shimmering blue dial sound like a migraine waiting to happen, but they just work for me.



With its polished bracelet and case, it can be an eye full and although I loved the aesthetic it could not be described as discrete. It's now in my wife's collection. I still love it but if I'm honest, it looks better on her.

My next (and probably last) blue dial Rolex is not as attention grabbing and stunning as a Z-Blue. It has old school beauty and depth of lustre, no doubt helped by its TT aesthetic but enhanced by the exquisite dial, a bit of YG and a ceramic bezel which balances it all.



I prefer the gold lettering so I am glad that I got one before the 11 series was discontinued. I even got a discount. Those were the days!

My favourite blue dial, and in my view the most clever, belongs to one of the oldest watches in my collection. A bit bashed and scratched in places, still in rotation and still keeping good time.



The AR coating under the sapphire is what gives the Carrera it's blue tint. Depending on the intensity and angle of light hitting it, it goes from black, to blue, through to 3D shimmering electric blue which pulsates and moves about. The silver hands and applied indices mean that even during a light show, the time remains easy to read.

The only other blue dial Rolex that I still admire is the SS Sky Dweller. When the time came to put it on my hit list, I opted for black because I already had three watches with blue dials (two Rolex), I had no black dial Rolex watches, and the black dial of the SS Sky Dweller is actually not black at all, although it often looks it.

Blue has it's place, but don't mistake it for having the staying power of Black.

I think it’s just personal preference.

I prefer blue, black, brown, green and white to pink, yellow, red, mauve or orange.

Probably a gender thing but whatever your preference is fine.

Blue is probably the most popular alternative to classic black, white and silver dials. If Rolex were to make a blue SS Sub, we would hit a new record in demand worldwide. In fact, I think now is a great time to fill in the gap left by the discontinued Nautilus 5711/1A. Just imagine a blue dial SS Sub...

My favourite blue dial watches are the TT Bluesy, the YM40, the DJ41 and the latest BB58.

Black is classic. Blue is more dynamic. While black will always be the first choice, blue will always remain.

Blue is dynamic but also has many different shades. I prefer light blue dials such as Ice blue of the Platinum Daytona and Z-blue of the Milgauss.

My first real watch was an Omega Seamaster with a blue bezel and dial. I purchased in 1998. All that's happened is blue has become more popular and appear on (seemingly) more and more watch models. I don't think this is a short term fad.

It has certainly become a "hot" color for watches in the last decade. I do think the blue watch fad will fade a bit over time. Just a lot of them out there (I own 2).

Black is the quintessential dial color for divers like the Sub, and silver is arguably the equivalent for casual everyday watches like the DJ. Safe, attractive, and great examples from each generation. Kind of like black or silver cars - maybe ubiquitous, but you can not go wrong.

Blue dialed watches, whether sport (Sub) or casual (DJ) are kind of like red cars. They will probably always exist, but not as common as black or silver. Bold and attention-grabbing, for better and for worse. Glad there is a variety of options!

Nothing beats the Yacht Master blue or the bluesy sub. I don't know about the YM but I think the sub will be around for a long long time. Timeless beauty for sure.

I bought a 36mm blue dial OP date in 1977. Wore it for over 30 years. Methinks blue is not exactly trendy.

I find black and stainless boring so blue wins for me.
