First Post and a question

I just bought a pre-owned submariner with date setting as a gift for my husband from Overstock.com. He will not be getting it for a few months. I have it safely hidden. The question that I have is: Is it okay to leave it in the box, untouched, unwound, not set for two months? When it came in the mail, the second hand was sweeping, but it has since stopped. I'm concerned that I may cause damage to the watch. Please let me know your thoughts.

Everything is okay. You can store the watch without question. In addition, since the watch is an automatic (self-winding movement, no battery) it will stop after about 40hours of not being worn. You're all good and what a great gift!

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the quick reply. The insurane appraisal that came with it, is about $250.00 less than I paid for it. Should I feel like I got duped? I felt like I got a good deal, but now I am concerend.

Without knowing what you paid for the watch, what year it is, and what model it is specifically, can't really tell you for sure one way or the other. To replace any Submariner Date (base model is the 16610, stainless steel) would cost 6,000 USD. You may want to see if you can't get replacement cost on the insurance, which would be 6k.

I paid $3,845. and it appraised at $3,600. I don't know how to find the date. It is the 16610 model, stainless steel with black face. I'm not very well versed in Rolex language. Any thoughts on now that I have it- what I should do next? Should I have it reappraised, verified for authenticity, insured immediately or wait until he gets it for his birthday? I really appreciate any and all input.

Do you know the serial number of the watch? While I would not doubt the authenticity of the watch, if you paid 3845, I think you've paid a reasonable price for the watch. It may not hurt to get it checked for authenticity (see if their is an Authorized Rolex dealer with watchmaker on staff in your area). Or a watchmaker who would be willing to open up the watch and verify the authenticity.

You should probably insure it sooner rather than later, just in case.

Seems reasonable to me.

Insurance values these thing based on an average condition for the age.

If a watch is in very good condition it will fetch much more that insurance values.
